Shoulder bump trick

It's ok; you're at the range anyway.dont need those keys or phone.

I don't use set and forget my lock rings unless I have one batch of brass only. Multiple batches or moreso different headstamps usually need a tweak when moving between them.

+1 to tracking fractions of revolution by whatever method.

1 set of brass last me a long time. a hundred pieces of lapua brass. after sorting and neck turning and annealing i take.care of that brass.

Even with one batch of brass, my experience hasn't been a set it and forget it deal as the brass work hardens from multiple firings. It's always close, but no cigar. My sizing die eventually needs tweaked to achieve a proper shoulder bump to allow a good feel on bolt close with the firing pin removed. That's why I like the shims or the PMA tool, because it makes those tiny adjustments easy to achieve. I refuse to tinker with the lock ring trying to make those fine adjustments on course threads. That's too difficult when I'm chasing around .001" this way or that. YMMV

Keep in mind I don't anneal my PPC cases, but have considered it many times because of this exact situation.

i must say as my reloading experience and shooting skill has evolved i have changed the way 8 do many things. one is the frequency of annealing and even the method. i have seen what you speak of with my BR. i check my shoulder bump after sizing every case. no doubt work hardened brass doesn't always hold that .001 shoulder bump. my annealing frequency went from every 5 firings to every 3 to now every time and i include more.of the shoulder where i was.concentrating on the neck. sure i could have chased that shoulder bump with the die but in my opinion consistency is the secret to everything in shooting. why not have consistent brass at every reloading

I agree. I've changed a lot of things too, but adding annealing isn't one of them. I may yet though, but the jury is still out for me and what I'm trying to do with my shooting which is focused on short range.

My main reason for not doing so is that I do not believe the vast majority of BR shooters in the short range game bother to do it at all and apparently don't feel the need to do so. Whenever I'm considering annealing, I look at the tiny aggs shot in big matches and I always think to myself, why add another step to my reloading regimen. If I was shooting long range, maybe I'd think of it differently. I may still try annealing at some point, but removing .001 of shims is a lot faster and quite simple. Annealing would be virtually impossible to do at a match.

Well it must not be too important if a current 1000 yard record holder does not anneal his brass.
