shoulder angles

40 but that's only part of the equation. Length and body diameter come into play too.

I think you can make anything feed if you spend enough money but you may not like the cost or modifications to the action.
For example take a look at a .458 Win Mag or .284 Win.
Remington used to sell .458 Win mags and plenty of 40 degree shoulders have been ran through them.

My 7x61 S&H Super has a 44 degree shoulder and feeds fine. As stated there are variables in the action which determine how easily another cartridge will feed in that action. The rails have a geometry based on length and diameter as the cartridge is pushed towards the chamber. The sides of the feed ramp aid in determining how the cartridge lines up with the chamber. The width and angle of the magazine box determine how the cartridges rise and meet the bolt face. The follower geometry determines how that cartridge gets aligned with the bolt.

All of this is real simplistic. Usually, a simple swap of cartridges within the same family is fairly painless; .243 Win. to .260 Rem. However, major switches often require significant alterations to the entire feeding system. Back when gunsmiths created big game rifles from standard M98 intermediate Mausers, those changes were tantamount to a combination of art and mechanics.

Detachable box magazines, especially those that feed from the center, have solved many of the discrepancies much to the joy of the average gunsmith.

There are several very well written articles about getting a system to feed from a magazine.

Regards.

There is a photo loaded set of posts by Duane Wiebe over at Accurate Reloading showing all the work it takes to get a .416 Rigby to feed through a Mauser clone. I would consider him in the top .1% of smiths when it comes to making a Mauser feed.
