What the heck does the P, A, or M stand for??? Don't be ashamed, I know some of you reload shotgun shells.

I have loaded my fair share of shotgun shells in 30 years of competition, and don't remember seeing a P,A or M on the boxes or stamped on the primer. Where are you seeing this marking? Is it a different marking on different brands or are these just on one brand?

P stands for premier, an older Remington designation for their premium product of the time. A stand for aluminum. M stands for magnum. STS stands for skeet, trap, and sporting (sporting clays). SC stands for sporting clays. What the differences are I couldn’t tell you. I found this info at shotgunworld.com.

Well that explains it. I stopped shotgun reloading around 1997. At that time, some factory loads were cheaper than buying components. Learn something every day.

Kind of guessing where you may be seeing these letters, but Remington used to make a 209 (P)premier, CCI makes a 209(M)agnum and Federal designates their 209 as “A” to differentiate it from their old 209 with no letter designation. They are generally not substitutable and you should follow a published and tested recipe to be safe.

Thanks for the info. I saw it in the Hogden shotgun reloading data shown in their little booklet you get while buying powder. Just curious.
