Shotgun blueing

Long story short my uncle left his beretta silver pigeon in the box of his pickup for a week... in the rain in a soft case. The blueing is peeling off or flaking off but no rust pitting.. who can he send it to too get it blued again? Thanks!

To the best of my knowledge Beretta over and under's are welded not soldered. They can be hot blued {they are when they are made} so anyone that does hot bluing should be able to polish and blue the barrels. You don't just throw them in a bluing tank though, they have to be completely polished and blued. Most of them, at least the newer ones made in the last like 30 years or so also have hard chrome lined bores and so the bores should be plugged before going in the tank.

This one is only about 10 years old. Im hoping to give him a few options and places to call on monday. Glenn rock bluing was also suggested to me. So i'll have my uncle call them to.

I could be way out in left field here but think I am on solid ground. Most all of the Beretta shotguns are black chromed on the outside. That is why you are seeing the bluing flake off.
At least one shotgun smith told me that the inside bores are also chrome lined. He said when he backbored
a Beretta barrel, he had to hone the bore instead of using a reamer because of the hardness.
I have several Beretta 680-682 guns, also 301-302-303's and I have never seen a barrel develop any light surface rust on them. And I wasn't a real good caretaker of some of my working guns.

You might be 100% right. I'll have to look into that.

Nope, he is definitely not 100% right. I have two Beretta shotguns, one is a 687L with two barrels and neither are "black chrome" on the outside. This is an older gun as one barrel has the New York importer on it {as opposed to Accokeek, Md.}. The other is a 687EELL Diamond Pigeon combo 20/28ga and it also does not have black chrome barrels.
There may be some that have black chrome on the outside and yep, yours could be one of them, but definitely not "most". It sounds like something they would do to competition type guns.
I live about 45 minutes from the factory in Accokeek and know a guy that worked there for many years. I will give him a call and see what he has to say. I don't think any of the O/U Beretta guns were made in the states, but he also owned several and being a big Beretta fanboy should know.

Edit: called the guy and he is saying they are blued. It was an interesting conversation because he said when he was there it was all they could do to get the hard chrome to work inside the bores. He test fired the M9 and he said the chrome would flake out and he would see it as sparks going "downrange". One day it started a fire in the indoor firing range. He said there was always a lot of unburned powder on the floor from all the test shooting.

FOGLES GUNSMITHING AND BLUEING IN WESTMANFEILD OHIO DOES A GREAT JOB 937 355 6085 THEY DID A COLOR CASEHARDEN SAVAGE O/U IT LOOK BETTER THAN WHEN IT WAS NEW

I have never heard of bluing peeling/flaking off.

Me either, but then again.....I have never heard of a hell of a lot of things people say in regards to guns!!! Freckling for example. There is a possibility that someone else had some other finish applied to this gun. There is also the possibility that Beretta used some other finish and/or it is not the model the owner thinks it is.
In today's conversation with the former employee he mentioned something about some over and under's being finished with Beretta's proprietary finish they call Bruniton {sic???}. It's Beretta's version of cerra-kote. He said they were using it on some later model O/U's on the receiver and that he thought the barrels were bead blasted and blued to make them appear matte. If they used it on receivers it is possible they might have used a matte version on barrels.
I have never heard of "black chrome" being used on large parts like barrels. Also, chrome requires copper plating before it is applied to better help it stick. Seems like that would be visible if it really is chrome "flaking" off.

I looked at the gun today. The blueing did not flake off like he said. It looks like the bluing is from a 100 year old gun that was toted around all fall long. It looks like the bluing basically bled away from the metal or something along those lines

Polish it off with some steel wool and keep it oiled. It will never be anything more than a shooter now. Lesson learned myself a long time ago with those hard cases and egg crate foam. :(

Is there some particular reason no one wants to send the shotgun to Beretta? Maybe just me but when I need a gun reblued I go to the manufacturer not someone else.
