Shot Show 2006

Just got back from the big show.

Spent quite a lot of time with the guys from Lapua, David Tubb, the Berger folks, and even spoke with the CEO of Norma, minutes after Tubb finalized the deal on 6XC brass.

I will be working on a full report tomorrow, including video interviews with David, John Krieger, and the Lapua guys.

Highlights:

1. I was told two months ago that the new Lapua 6.5x47 would have a large primer pocket and large flash hole. They've changed it. Right now it has a small flash hole and small primer pocket and is rated to about 63,500 psi. Very interesting.

2. Norma is fully committed to producing 6XC brass for David. Delivery is expected in June 2006.

3. Berger has a couple of new bullets.

4. Hodgdon acquired the Winchester Powder line.

5. Zeiss has a new scope with built-in range-finder and it looks very impressive.

6. I got a look through the Pentax 100 ED spotting scope. Eye relief is really good, and the quality of the eyepieces is superb. I compared it to the Zeiss and Leica 85s, and well, I know which one I would buy and it starts with a P. The lenses are THAT good.

7. Norma is putting together a distribution deal for their powders. The distributor will be Black Hills shooting supply. Expect stuff to start arriving on US Shores in early summer.

8. The OEM brass deal between Lapua and Dakota is in flux. It's now unclear just how many varieties of brass will be produced for Dakota. However, Erkki Seikkula of Lapua made it absolutely 100% clear that Lapua will continue to produce and distribute 220 Russian brass as before--so you PPC shooters don't worry about that one.

More to come...

Be careful what you ask for - reports from some shooters using Remington URBR cases, thin walled .308 cases w/ small flash holes - originally used for forming into 6 and 7mm BR) for .308 loads indicated that hang fires occured under certain conditions, usually cooler weather). A specific primer,Remington small rifle match, I think) was required for more reliable ignition. I forget if there were still hang fire issues even after changing primers.

David Tubb reported that the 6XC case incorporated a large primer due to possible ignition issues with small rifle primers in a 35+ grain capacity case under certain, unspecified) conditions. See post #6 at http://www.benchrest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22120
Posts #9 and 22 at http://www.benchrest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22759 seem to agree with this statement as well.

Asa, as an experiment, I provided a fair number of .308 small primer cases to a very good LR shooter here to form into 6XC brass. So far he's had very good results with them and no ignition problems at all in temperatures from about 40 degrees to about 80 degrees. That's not a definitive or controlled tes but it's a good indicator.

I have a stash of the original Remington 308 UBR brass: I use it exclusively to make brass for my 30x47HBR Hunter Rifles; especilly when I get a "killer" barrel! I have shot THOUSANDS of rounds over the last two decades and NEVER experienced a hang-fire or, misfire; I have used this brass mostly with CCI-BR4 primers, but over the last four years, have used a substantial number of WSR primers with excellent results. I have shot in conditions ranging from -10 Deg. F to over 100 Deg. F . . . and have won/placed/showed at National Championship events . . . and more often, just scared the BIG DAWGS - even when they were telling me that the small primers, "won't work"! ;) R.G.

Guys,

As you can see from the Home Page, my full shot-show report has been posted at: http://www.6mmBR.com/shotshow2006.html

There's quite a lot of interesting info, including, of course, more details about the 6.5x47 Lapua:

I do apologize for the much higher than average number of typos this time but I think I've caught most of them. I worked until 3am to get the story out and have been fighting a cold, so I'll blame the typos on the Sudafed.

I truly enjoyed your SHOT show information. Keep it up. Wish I could have been there. I think they are in Orlando again next year so I will be there!

Moderator,
Really appreciate the spec/info sheet on the 6.5x47 but when you save the pic and enlarge it you cannot read it.

Can we please have a link to a larger/clerarer pic or the location/link to the Lapua/nammo site where we can find the info.

Thanks

The only real information on the front page is the psi rating,63,090). On the back page of the flyer is a drop chart and comparison of various calibers. I summarized that info in the chart on the article. But I'll go to Kinkos, and see if they can do a high rez scan. Unfortunately I don't have a scanner compatible with my computer.

But it's a good idea to have the data sheet available.

I held a 6.5x47 Lapua case in my hands today for a way too short moment. It had the small primer and came from the SHOT Show. It looks like the perfect 6mm case for something bigger than the 6BR,which of course is the perfect case overall). :D

Not much of a jump to making the 6.5X47 to 6X47. Die and reamer work from 6XC is also easy.
Wish I had 500 pcs. I have the reamer ready.

Alan,

I told Erkki Seikkula we could probably have the first 15,000 pieces of brass sold out in a couple weeks. Do you agree?

Lapua's factory starts cranking the stuff out at the end of March. Figure mid- to late-May for arrival.

Any thoughts of a group buy?
