Shot my 6mm Creedmoor 1st time today

Gunsmith finished my rifle build yesterday.Today's loads were Hornady New Brass, 43.8grs H4350 Sierra 95gr TMK 2.800 OAL produced under 1/2 MOA in moderate winds in NV desert . Average MV was 3230.
Rem 700 Sendero 26"Bartlein 8"twist 5R rifling . Also first time out with my Athlon Cronus BTR 4.5x29x56mm scope. I thought my SWFA SS 5x20x50mm HD scope was great. This Cronus is "Bad to the Bone" ......... This powder is 5+ years old. I wonder what the difference will be with new can of H4350 ?

NONE 5 years is nothing in the life of gunpowder. I am using powder that was given to me and is dated 1967. However the new powder may be a different burn rate as the formula may have changed.

Congrats on the new rifle. Getting a 6mm Creedmoor barrel screwed on my Surgeon action now myself. Mine will have a 28" 7.7 twist Bartlein on it.

There are always small lot to lot differences in powder but shouldn't be tough to do a small tweak to a new lot to get you can to the performance of the 5 year old lot you are using.

One thing that can be done to smooth out the transition from powder lots to lot is either but in larger jugs or blend the new with the old say abt half way through, tweak the load and continue shooting and having fun.

Can't find any H4350 ! So I bought some 4000 MR 42.8grs behind 95gr TMK produced 2930 .Worked my way up to 44.5 producing 3100FPS. Zero pressure signs, all loads were well under 1/2MOA but I need more speed for MT Prairie Dogs. Tomorrow I'll start at 45.5 grs. Any guesses how Re#19 would perform ?

Yeah you can do that but you have to make sure you mix it up really good.

Ironworker, try some IMR4451. It's a very good powder and a good replacement for H4350. My friend who is putting on my barrel sent me a pic of the test target group he shot with the factory 108 ELD ammo. I am happy with that.

H-4350 is shipping to most distributors as we speak but it will obviously take a few days to get into the system.

I suggest using one of these:

Re-16
Norma URP
Accurate 4350
Ramshot Hunter (check for the lot number being recalled)

but I need more speed for MT Prairie Dogs

You can get some more velocity from the powders above but if you need MORE velocity than those will supply, then you need more horsepower as in a more case capacity and higher BC bullets.

Regards.

Just got back from range . Wasn't overly impressed with IMR 4451 . Starting loads were 43grs behind 95gr TMK average velocity was 3,104 4 shot group with a FLYER .389 but 4th shot opened it up to .750 dang it . Next 43.5 grs avg 3,135 similar group size . Then 7 shots at 44.0 grs .650 . Nevada windy conditions ,maybe some one with younger eyes could've done better. 43.8grs of good old H4350 produced 3235 AVG with SD of 9.9. Then I burned some Aliant 4000 MR 45.5 produced avg of 3240( Hi 3260-Low 3228 ) with an honest .500 in same conditions . Then 46.5 grs and ave of 3316 with horrible accuracy of 1.377 . Zero pressure signs . Not sure if I'll load up for MT with 4000MR I hear H4350 is on its way.

Thanks for the information. I put together a 6 Creed and something was a bit amiss. My smallest reamer bushing was an extremely tight fit and had to work at it to get it pulled out of the barrel. So............. First time at bat and we blew a primer and shot like crap. Used H4350, Hybrid 100 and Superformance. Got load data from Hornady and used 107 SMK (that's all I had at the time) with Superformance being the best. Reloaded brass with Superformance and jumped 10, 20, 30, 40 thousand with 40 being the best:confused:. Used some 105 Hornady Match and 105 Nosler Competition and both shot better than the 107 SMK. Annealed and resized and back at it again. Have since built another 6mm CM with a barrel that seems to be correct:).
Looking forward to test driving them both next weekend. Will probably try the IMR 4451 somewhere down the road. The tight bore CM is finally putting three touching and five under .75 inch. No idea on the speed.

Interesting ,mine shoots better than anything the MT Prairie Dogs require . Local rip off gun shop has H4350 for $45 bucks . So I think I'll load up using Aliant 4000MR . But I do have a can of that Superformance .....

Too bad the 4451 didn't work out but that's why we try different powders as some work with some rifle and bullet combos and some don't. Maybe 4451 will work better with the 105+ weight bullets as that is where I see most shooters using it.

Rev 1:7 and Philippians 2:10 .... I'm short on time, lots of ammo to load so I paid the awful high price for H4350.
I shot my first sub 1/4moa group at 300yds with RE17 back a few years from my 1st 6 creed, tried 4451 with coated DTACs last fall, the more powder I put in the worse the accuracy got, I'd say keep that powder below 41.5grs with 105s. Had a feeling that 4000MR might work, Ironworker, are you the one I told to try that powder on facebook?

Jaygorski Yes that's me. 45.5 of 4000 MR produced under 1/2MOA 3230 FPS 46.5 opened up the group to nearly 1.5 MOA and 3330FPS. IMR 4451 produced just barely acceptable accuracy but low velocity even with a heavier charge than H4350

If you have a 8 twist now try the heavier bullets with that 4000MR, might be an ideal powder for the heavies. 110/115DTACs
