Shorter Range Scope - Magnification?

I am coming up a bit empty trying to find the right scope for an AR10 308 rifle. Probably because I will be shooting the AR off a bench and am looking for the best accuracy possible. Yes, I know a semi is not best for accuracy, but it is fun making ARs shoot well. For shooting small groups at 100 and 200 yards (very rarely 300), what magnification (or range) is ideal? It would be nice to use a "tactical" looking scope for the AR. I also prefer MOA reticles, as I have no need for mil-dots for range use. But finding fine MOA reticles in a tactical type scope is not easy. Sightron has one, but each hash mark is 2 MOA. A bit coarse I would think. I will take functionality over looks, so "tactical" appearance is a last priority. Scope suggestions for $850 or less? I would consider used as well.

Shorter Range Scope - AR10?

One of my favorite mid-range scopes is the Leupold 6.5-20x, 40mm w/ target knobs. Have one mounted on my AR Flatop. Excellent condition used are available in the $450 to $500 price range & the forever warranty makes them an even better buy. A lot of the "Made in the USA" quality remains.

I do not have a good feel for what magnification is necessary to print small groups at 100 and 200 yards. That would help me narrow scope choices. I use a Bushnell Elite 4200 6 - 24 x 50 on an AR15, and even at 100 yards, I may use 15 - 20x. From what I read, that is too much, so what am I missing? Perhaps I am doing this to make up for any lack of clarity. ??? I just can't see how one can make fine adjustments and hone in precisely on the target for small groups with modest magnification. Am I wrong or not taking something into consideration.

I run a minimum of 6.5x20,but as my eyes decay,I like at least 6-24 power for target clarity. I have an 8-32 on my m1a and I like it. If I had more money the 8-32 would be my next selection.I like the bushnell 4200's as they are affordable and the sightrons as well. I hope this helps.

Your response is interesting. I have a Bushnell 4200 on my AR15 in 6 - 24 and find myself using the higher end (20X) even at 100 yards. I thought I was abnormal from what others say. I have also been looking at the Sightrons, specifically one that is 6 - 24 X 50 with MOA reticle. 2 MOA per hash mark though.

Yes, your response helped. I appreciate it.

Within reason, you cannot have "too much" magnification. But that only applies if it's a varable power scope, giving you the option of 6.5x, to 20x, 30x, etc. It can be extremely difficult to find a very small target at the closer distances if you're locked in to a high magnification, like the Leupold Competition Series at 35,40 & 45x. Field of view is just way too narrow. On the other hand, it's really beneficial when you have the ability to find your shot holes at the further distances, out to around 300 yards or so, by increasing the power. A seperate spotting scope then becomes an added piece of equipment ( also can be very pricey for a good one) that is not required. Many excellent choices out there in the 6 to 25x variables to meet your needs. Get the best you can afford, and only spend once. ;)
