shorten and rechamber anschutz .22lr

Hi ,im new to the site and im looking to see if any one has done this ,aswell?I have an anschutz mpr with a 26" barrel .Im getting it shortened down to around 19-20"and rechambering it with a win 52d match reamer .Any advice would be greatly recieved .

I'm guessing the original barrel had iron sights, and that is the reason for the 26" length. Assuming you are going to a scope then I think a shorter barrel is a good idea. Should be stiffer and accuracy may improve. Will let you put a fresh 11 deg. target crown on it as well.

On the chamber, I wonder how much you will gain. Based on the dimensions in the chart below, you are actually going to a larger diameter chamber. If it wasn't for the slight difference in length, you could probably just open up the existing chamber to the Win 52 D Match diameters. If it were me, I think I would stay with the tighter Anschutz chamber.

You don't say why you are shortening it. Is accuracy less than you feel it should be? With Anshutz barrels many people who have cut off the knob and recrowned have had accuracy worsen. With the factory barrel it might be better to cut off the chamber end only. But just shortening to have a short "in" barrel might not give the accuracy you were hoping for. Good luck.

Be very careful recrowning anschutz barrels. Their production process creates an abrupt choke at the muzzle. Sometimes, though, the tightest point may be as much as .5" behind the muzzle. I would suggest slugging the barrel to find the best place to chamber as well as whether or not the crown requires moving. The unfortunate thing with rimfires is you don't actually get to chose your barrel length, the barrel tells you.

Like Ron, I would also suggest a tighter reamer, the ".22 Eley EPS" reamer is very popular. It's basically the same as the anschutz, just with a traditional 1.5* throat.

Sage comment. The thing about barrels is that they follow the old "what have you done for me lately" theme. Yes, you want them to be tight at the muzzle. Does not matter much what goes on early, compared to the last few inches of the barrel. You want them tight at the muzzle.

Again if accuracy is the interst, then I would suggest investigating a barrel tuner. A .22LR bullet spends about 3X the time in the barrel compared to a centerfire, and is highly influenced by barrel vibration. It is controllable with a tuner.

The rifle is bedded and has a front pillar .11* recrown ...and shoots only ok.About .5 at 50 yards .I had 2 options ,work with the factory barrel of buy in a match barrel (lilja).I also have another problem with the anschutz leaving drag marks on some of the rounds she cycles .I think thats just a mag fault ???.Is there a replacement mag other than anschutz ,for the mpr?Thanks for info and advice so far ,guys .

I use savage rimfire mags from brownell's - some need fitting some don't.
At 1/4 the $.
Check into Calfee chambers - I think there are 4.
Alot depends on what type of shooting you'll be doing.

I would suggest selling the 64 and taking that money and the money you planned on spending on it and buying a superior single shot rifle. At the very least you should consider an 1800 series or newer Annie 54 with the 5018 trigger.
