Short range benchrest stocks????

Phil

Gold $$ Contributor
I`m looking for opinions on short range benchrest stocks.....

What are you using and what do you like about it????

If you are dissatisified what would you rather have????

Thanks,

Phil.

Terry Leonard, Roy Hunter and Scoville. All handmade, excellent fit and finish, tracks perfect.

Phil,
Are you talking serious competition Benchrest with an unlimited financial investment in a stock or a semi-serious Benchrest shoot mostly for personal fun and entertainment with constraints on expenditures?

I was looking at a Leonard and a .30BR,but it sounds like it might not be the best stock/caliber combo...

I`m thinking if I stick with the Leonard that I should rethink the caliber and build a 6PPC...

Again, assuming I go with the Leonard,i`m thinking I would be shooting free recoil due to the stock shape and the fact that I have BIG hands....

Also I would be shooting this in a couple of local matches only with a 13.5lb. rule, but if I ever decide to sell it would be nice to have it fit a class so it would be easier to move...

What do you guy`s think about the Shehane ST-BR baby tracker stock?????

Phil.

I shoot a ST-1000 . this thing tacks very well . I use it both for bench and F-class prone. I orderd it from Bill shehane from D and B Supply. Good man to work with can answer any questios you my have.

Phil,,,go to a shooting match and look at what the competitors are using,,,during practice times most will gladly let you sit down behind their particular stock and see how it feels to YOU,,,,and YOU can see what feels right ,,,The Shehane stocks are usually ONLY for long range events,,,,NOT legal at short range 100-200-300 yd events!!....conversly the short range stocks ARE legal at long range,,,McMillan Edge is a good readily available stock and Bruno has some of his own design available,,,kelbly makes many styles,,,these work just as good as the $$$$$$ stocks,,,Roger

The Shehane ST-BR baby tracker IS legal for short range BR, although it is a bit heavy.

I have a Terry Leonard stock, and several Scoville & Scarborough stocks. I find that I can shoot them pretty much interchangeably - IE they feel the same to me. They all shoot and track very well. All these makers have a long lead time for delivery, though I believe Leonard is the shortest leadtime of them all.

If you look at any large match equipment list, you will see that Leonard / Scoville / Scarborough stocks are by far the most common in the top placings.

Having said all that, you might find the quickest way to get set-up is to buy a used rifle with the action / stock combo you want.

Phil if your looking to get into short range Benchrest, the best advise has already been given. "Go to a match and see what everyone is using." Only you can find a stock that YOU like, and is in your price range. Try other and see what YOU like, and don't depend on internet poster to make your decision.

I have baby Tracker, and yes it is legal, but you will have one heck of a time getting it to make weight in a 10.5 lbs rifle class. I had to carve, and drill and do all kinds of things just to get close, and I am still toting the line. The stock has a deeper drop, and is squared off and tracks very well. It is just hard to get a laminate stock to make weight, regardless who makes it. I would avoid the specialty woods offered as a weight saving measure as from my experience I have seen where they are more brittle, and more prone to crack/breakage.

The Scoville and Leonard stock are the Cadillac of Benchrest stock, they are nice but are very pricy. I am not a big fan of them because of the short drop in the back. I like a stock with more drop, as from my experience it helps the rifle resist torque, and track better. The Edge, and Bruno Edge stocks are good, many use them. I don't like the older versions of them as they hand a rounded back, and I like a squared off stock, The new versions are squared off. They are super light, and work well. Kelbly's makes several different stocks, and they work well. The Club is a bit short in drop for my liking.

I personally like The Tom Meredith stock works, TMBR. The stock is well priced, and tracks well, I like the drop, on it and the squared off back. the forearm is a bit on the longer side than some stock, and I think this is also a great feature. There is two versions of the stock one is made by Kelbly and other is made by McMillan the design is exactly the same but the McMillian is a tad bit heavier, and doesn't have anchor points for a butt plate like the Kelbly stock does. I have both and I like the McMillian a tad bit better, just feel a bit more stiffer.

The best thing to do is try out others stuff and see what works best for you.
