Short-notice trip to Alaska, can I hunt?

I have a work-related trip to Anchorage that will be occurring in the next 1-2 months. I've never been to Alaska and would like to bring a rifle along for a potential hunting opportunity. I realize that in all likelihood I may not be able to accomplish much given the short notice but if anyone could steer me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Wolf, sheep and Caribou is what I would be most interested in. Thanks for any advice.

I believe moose, caribou and wolves can be hunted without a licensed guide in AK, but sheep and brown bears require a guide. Some areas have over the counter licenses, others are draw areas. I am not sure what your time frame will be, be sure and check game laws first. I would strongly encourage a guide for your trip. Alaska is a huge area, the regulations are very confusing, and getting game out is required by law. Good Luck,

Scott

ive hunted around anchrage. Sheep hunters need guide. I dont think you will be able to find wolves close. Black bear is your best bet. Ive been in the ship creek drainage north of anch. This was a moose draw unit and state park so no other hunting permitted. Lots of grizz 13 in 5 days. 20 min in we were charged by momma and 3 cubs. I have also been in the talkeenta for caribou draw unit for that. But also purchased moose, wolf and bear tags. That was a fly in drop diy. Lot of seasons will be closing around your time line. Homer halibut charter are fun but the will also be closed for season in next cpl weeks. Cld find a charter and fly in to some better wolf areas and do a drop but solo that time of year might invole frozen toes and near death experinces. Private rigs will still be halibut fish n. now is when then catch some of the biggest for the year. Get a regulations book or look online for season info. Also a call to the local dnr might help. Even with info solo hunts up there are tough.

Around here in South Central Alaska-Moose season ended Sept. 25th.
You might bring your shotgun. You can get Grouse and Ptarmigan hunting that can be accessed via our road system. Be careful though, within the next few weeks we'll get the snow that stays for the Winter.

Well your top three will be tough out of Anchorage. Assuming road based? Sheep is closed (you would need a guide anyway) wolf and caribou would be much further north. Moose general season is closed.

Best bet would be black bear. Plenty of places to glass and walk. Depending on your timing may already be denned up though. Aug and sept are best times up here

Ak is a pretty tough place to hunt. Logistics and timing. Get yourself a set of hunting regs. You mentioned sheep so I figure you don't have a set...not raining on your trip, but just saying I hung up the hunting rifles about a week ago and I live here. I might have a late bou trip but that would be a ak resident deal. Bring a camera if it turns out to be November timeframe
