short cycle with AR-15 with ramshot tac powder and 40gr bullet

300 RUM

Gene Nowaczyk
Any one have problems using Ramshot powders? I am getting a short cycle with AR-15 with ramshot tac powder and 40gr bullet? any ideas???

300 rum,
How much are u using? Tac is a great powder for the .223, a little dirty but used it with 77 gr smks with great success. Without looking at my books I wanna say 25 gr, cci reg primer and 40 gr varmit grenades worked quite well on prairie dogs...
Let me check the books tonight.
Cheers,
Doc

I want to say maybe 26gr with the 40gr V-Max. Everything seems to OK, gas tube, the rifle is clean, gas rings look good etc???

You know what, I may be trying to shot "neck sized only" brass. If thats the case it will short cycle. I bet I have my ammo mixed??

i think you might be onto something...if the bolt carrier group and gas rings tube are good..the load seems right.. full length size and load 10. i bet they shoot better. give your chamber area a good deliberate scrub out too. any chance you might have some qtip in the gas tube or carrier key? all in all i bet oyu will fix it with the FL sized brass. good luck post up the solution when you get it.
cheers,
doc

Already loaded up 20 rounds to test fire in the AM, I sure hope that is the only problem. Well see will post results ASAP.

With the information currently supplied it is hard to do much else but speculate on what is going on.

If you do not have good results tomorrow then I have four questions to help narrow down some issues:

Does it cycle fine with other loads and ammo?

What's the length of the barrel?

Does it have standard or extended porting (or something else)?

What's your port diameter?

This AR is a stock "Bushmaster" with a 16" barrel. I looked for my head space "go/no go " gauge and seem of of lost them, but I did measure the case head space of the current ammo and it is .005" longer then the cases that I sized and loaded today.

Best of luck with your test firing today.

We run into questions like yours periodically from our customers and many times it is a re-loaded ammo related issue. We even made an info page on our website to address some of those issues (i.e. see "Rules for Reloading" section). Here's the link to it:

I think you are probably on the right track.

Ok just test fired the 20 rounds, they worked flawlessly !!! I shot 3 one after another and then just went for it boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom awh! what a lovely sound.

I went and measured all/most of my loaded ammo and found that they are mostly for my competition AR-15, I could swear I had some F/L sized in the box? But glad to of found the problem!
