Short chambering 204R to 221 Fireball length???? is that a 20VT??

HI

If I get the Gsmith to run a 204R reamer into the barrel to 221 Fireball go-guage length- how close would that be to a 20 VT??

What I plan to do is get the Gsmith to run the reamer in short,221FB length) and then get hin to cut down a set of 204R FLS and the seating dies to suit the chamber he's cut.

How close would this chamber be to a 20 Vt chamber??

What sort of velocity do you think I could get with the 39 BK?

Thanks

I don't know about your plan - the 20VT is the 221FB necked down to 20. You need to do a dimensional check to see if the case dimensions are the same, to the depth you are looking at.

You didn't say what the chamber is/was to begin with so it's hard to say if your idea will clean everything up. I think the neck of the 204 is a little shorter than the vartarg and other dimensions like shoulder diameter and base diameter will probably be a little different. But, to answer your Q, no it won't be a Vartarg but it will be a ballistic twin. If you intend to have custom made dies there should be no big deal in loading for it. My biggest concern would be base diameter since the 204 reamer will have a taper and by not running it in all the way it could leave the base undersize. maybe, maybe not, and it depends on the dimensions of the brass you would use. These types of wildcats,short-stroke) are made all the time.

Ray the barrel will be a NEW- unfired Ruger 204 Stainless Target take off barrel.
The action it will be going on is a Sako 461.

I was considering just getting the barrel put on as a 204R but I already have a 222 and 223 and a 223AI being built.
I was after something quiter for use on small properties and using less powder but with a lot more grunt than a 22LR.

I was going to have the Ruger barrel cut to the same length as the shot out 17 Rem barrel thats currently on the Sako 461 ATM.

After reading about the 20 VT on the 20 Cal section of this site I have been trying to get one.

If short chambering the 204R wouldn't work what about short chambering the body reamer for a .223AI to 221 fireball length in the cut down factory 204R chamber??
Should make something like a 20VT improved???

Just throwing around ideas- but I really like the idea of a 20 VT- I'm just trying to get one without all the hassles of getting a dedicated 20VT reamer imported to Australia. it's not the cost it's the time and paperework and anti gun stance of australia post and customs I don't want to deal with, If I can get away with it.

thanks

It will work but it wont be quiet...I'm running a 20 tac right now just over 25 grains of powder...39 gr bullets...It has one mean crack sound..Everyone looks at the range when they first hear that thing go off...I think your idea is sound..try to use a 223 body or 223 imp version...It will be a killer..I got mine shooting really well with one in eleven twist loves the heavy boatail bullets in that caliber...I've got 2 or 3 decent looking one hole groups in as many trips to the range..mike in ct
