short barrel .308

Gonna re-barrel and make a short .308 with suppressor for hunting and would like some input on twist and brand. Currently have 1-10 Bartlein 24".

Why not just have that 24” shortened to 16-1/4” then threaded for the can you want to use? 1:10’s fine for hunting-weight .30 cal bullets. If you want to use lighter than 155’s you may be better off finding a 1:14 though.

16 to 20 inch barrel suppressed would be a nice hunting setup. 10 twist would handle anything you wanna run bullet weight wise. I personally hunt with a 22 inch barreled .308 using 168 gr Berger hunting VLDs and it does a fine job on deer and hogs. I'm about to cut it back to 18-20 inch and run it suppressed as well.

If you are buying a new barrel I don’t think it really matters what twist you get I would get whatever is available. If you’re not planning to run hunting bullets heavier than the 165 glass bullets you’d be fine with a 1:12 which is what everything was before we started running things heavier than 185. I think at some point the Army decided you needed a 1:11.25 for 175s which is why you see so many of those.

If you are ordering a barrel and want to shoot subsonic bullets over 200 grains get an 8 twist. Thats what the SAAMI spec is for the 300 Blackout.

I’ve got a 18” on a gun and set up for suppressor. Box Hornady 168amax are coming out just under 2600fps. Think they avg 2597 is what it was. Nice little hammer.

Daughter hunts with a 16 inch barrel, we use 168 Barnes TTSX bullets. she bang flopped a nice 8 point at 105yds on Friday. Accuracy is very good, barrel is a Criterion finished at 16 by them.

I have an 18" slim profile barrel on my Barrett 98b field craft in .308 that I use for hunting.

Fitted with a moderator it is awesome, I choose this over all of my other rifles, it's just so handy, accurate, mag fed not too heavey it's the go to gun

I don't know why more people don't use short barrelled .308 rifles for hunting.

I had a Parker Hale 1300 scout rifle 30 years ago that was awesome when out hunting, it had a 20" barrel- it's only draw back was that the magazine was poor and unreliable but the principle was the same

Don't hesitate to go short
