Short Barrel 284W

I've been contemplating a nice shorter barrel 284W for a while. I have a long action to build on, so seating depth isn't an issue. Does anyone have real world experience with say a 20" or 22" 284? I'd obviously like to run heavies, but if I lose too much speed in the length I could go in the 150-160gr range. I want it short for both weight saving and for suppressor use.

W 760-H 414,4350,or V 160 works well in the short barrels. I have one in a mdl 100 Win,but the 120-140 class is as heavy as I use in it and it would be (depending on bullet) one of the powders mentioned.

I have a custom XP with a 14 inch barrel. 4831sc/4831 is the go to powder i believe, id have to look at its data to verify. It20150812_195548_001.jpg does very well with a short barrel. At 20" or 22" pick one and run with it.

What kind of velocity do you get out of that xp? My savage striker 3006 gets 2700 with 168's and that's from a 16" barrel.

I havent chroned it, reloading stuff is still in boxs from moving... started building a house right after i got it then to shoot it a little

I have a Savage Striker with a 19" 284 barrel. I get 2680 fps with a 168gr Berger and a mid level charge of H4831sc. I imagine I could hit 2750 fps pretty easily.

BS .284win sucks on short barrels and heavy bullets (above 160gn), you might as well go for a 6.5x47 an have better drop and drift than slow .284win at any distance , on the other hand if your shooting in all sub 600y it doesnt really mater as you are not making use of the .284win potential anyway

Have been running .284win and RL17 combo on a long action tactical rig for 3 years now and shot past 1500y with it , had loads with .162 amax from too hot to trot 3180fps (only safe in cold weather hard on brass) to allround preforming load at 2830fps out of a 28in barrel , and some 2730fps on 180 Scenar L in a all round load altough 2850fps can be achieved its not something you would want to do over time as it trashes cases after 2-3 reloads when primer pockets get loose.

What is your case capacity in H2O and your OAL? Quickload shows 79K pressure for that velocity, bbl and powder combo. Case hold more than 66 grains?
18'' b ,162 Amax ,2900fps on RL17 , dream on . All those F-class suckers with their 30-32in barrels maxing out at 2850-2900fps on 180s 2950-3000fps on 162s maybe they need some of those 18'' tubes

In my hunting 284 SP Pistol,
I am running a 18" bbl, (21" w/muzzle brake),
I use RL-26 with 162gr bullets @ 2930+ fps,
140 @ 3150+ fps,
works good on deer/elk out to 550+yds.

Have a 280 AI being built, as it's big brother,
20" bbl.

Tia,
Don

The high accuracy node in my 22" 7x57, using RL-22, launches 168 Berger Classic Hunters, 162 AMAX, and 160 NPT, all seated for about .080 jump, right at 2700. This is with Norma brass, having an internal capacity of 59.4 grains, and loaded to modern pressures.

With a 10% increase in capacity over the 7x57, I would expect the .284 to be able to push the same weight bullets between 100 and 150 fps faster from the same length barrel, provided it is throated for them. I would expect going to the 180's to put you back in the 2700's for velocity.

If the additional capacity is enough to allow you to shift to a slower powder (such as RL-26, mentioned by Nvreloader), that may increase your velocity potential significantly (or, perhaps, allow you to step up to 195's). I haven't had any personal experience with RL-26, so I can't say for sure how that would work out.

I use a Oehler 43 combined with Quickload for all of my load development and although the powder / loads can vary as far as how many grains ( case capacity differences ) one thing is pretty constant is velocity and pressure. Velocity = pressure. I load to QL velocity and the pressure is always close to the programs prediction. Not knowing exact load details you are around 76K pressure with this load at 2930 fps.

Still call it BS out of an 18in tube ,throw your chrony away its lying.

You can occasionally push loads to red hot but that is not something to use all the time i ran my 28 in tube up to an accurate load at 3180fps on Amax and some 55gn of RL17 but load was safe only in very low temps and it still pierced a Murom magnum primers here and there plus wasted brass after 2 reloads ,all bullets were HBN coated , 317 no turn neck and .212fB chamber , throat eroded/grew 0.19 so ths now (cca .231 in some 1600 rounds on a black cut rifled barrel mostly shot cold bore ,no string shooting. Loads have been systematicaly recorded all the time over 3 Magneto V3 ,Oehler 43 and pact so a good amount of data accomulated . Allround safe loads with single digit SDs are at cca 2890 on HBN and RL17 , and 2830 on naked bullet.

I like what i hear. I've spotted a few of the eld-M 162's in anchorage as of lately. I'd like ot run those out of probably a 20-22", which makes it handy still with the suppressor on. Based on the above results, I'd think I could get 3000 pretty easy out of that setup. I currently have a 28" 284W barrel on that rifle and I'd like to switch if from a bench gun to a hunting/prs style rifle.
