Short Barrel .260Rem Thoughts

I have ordered a reamer for a future build and I am asking for some barrel length advice.

My plans are as follows:
***Berger 140gr Hybrids
***Fairly Short Barrel
***Gun will be used for Deer Hunting out to 600yards
***Will shoot targets out to 800yards
***Will run a suppressor on it at all times

I want the gun to be a medium weight easy carry gun that is can still shoot fairly long distance with.

Recommendations on optimum barrel length in the 19"-22" range?

Thank you,
Jim

Cut a 26" down to a 22" and it went from a .6 gun to a .3 and .4 gun. It was a hammer out to 900yds but opened up some at 1000yds. For you needs a 22" would be great. I don't like them much shorter but that's just me.

Raptor,

Thanks for the info.

For this build I was thinking about a #5 contour, and that should give me about .740 at the muzzle with a 22" barrel.

Thanks,
Jim

RC,

Search for boilerup. He used or uses a 20" 26 REM, and gets low 2700 fps. with 140's. I would think a 20" barrel would work well.

Have a look at this and the spec noted below it. Have shot it out to 1000 yds at targets, but mainly used on deer at much shorter ranges.

Good luck with the build.

JCS,

Good looking setup.

The reamer I am having built is pretty close to yours. I plan on using the Berger 140gr Hybrids and Lapua brass. It will have a .2975 Neck and a .180 Freebore.

What load are you shooting? Velocity?

Thanks
Jim

Reamer is finished and enroute to my gunsmith. I settled on a 20" #5 Contour barrel, some length as one I built my daughter.

My daughter's gun has a Benchmark Barrel and I went with a Rock Creek on this one. If this Rock Creek shoots even close to as good as my Rock Creek 7 RSAUM, I will be one happy shooter.

I am ready to get the baby put together. If everything works out, it should be done in time for a late season deer hunt.

Jim. Thanks very much. Hornady 129 gr SP with 44.3 gr N160 in Lapua brass. 2800 fps over the Magneto Speed. Have managed to get one or two like the following recently. Off out in a week's time to try for another red stag or two.
