Short 1000 Yards

So I've been toying with this idea for a while and I figured I'd throw it out there and see what I get back. I have always wanted to build a 1000 yard plus gun with a 16 or 18" barrel. Although it is ballistically possible in several ways I am curious as to what everyone's own caliber and bullet thoughts would be.

What will you be doing with this gun? What degree of accuracy is required at 1000 yards?

Guys with specialty pistols have been doing for years.

I had an XP-100 with a 18" in 6.5-284. First time out I shot a 9 1/2" group at 1K off a bipod. The learning curve with a SP is a bit longer than a rifle.

I have a 17 1/2" 223 rifle for prairie dogs. It's an annoying prick to shoot after a while.

Most folks would be very, very surprised at how well a short barrel will shoot at any distance...

I have seen it done with a 308win at sea level using factory Blackhills 175s, it wouldn't be my choice but it can be done

This would be a tactical type gun given the size, not benchrest or anything. And all my Bolt guns at the moment are short barreled so I am well versed in the surprising distance and accuracy of short (rigid) barrels. That is allure for me...I love hitting the range with a short barreled bolt gun and surprising the yahoos that ask "that little thing gon make it out der" (spelling for emphasis). Have a 19" 6.5 Grendel bolt that pops ballistic heads at 700 for the aforementioned purpose.
So now I wanna run it out to 1K and stay as short as possible.
