shooting to match ballistics

I'm not sure where this belongs but.......
has anyone shot at 100 yards and put the bull at the bottom of the paper then shot using that as the zero and then moved the poi up counting the clicks and shooting after a few clicks moving the poi to the top of the paper checked the ballistic table against the actuall target to see where the impact would be for 200 300 400 500 600 etc....
i'm probably not very clear but it worked for a 223 shooting 55 grain bullits...
i worked it up then shot the actual distances and they were really close.... for someone that doesn't have long ranges to shoot i think it would work......i might try to get some pics tomorrow if it will quit snowing here to illustrate what i mean.

I think I am understanding you...and that is a great way to confirm that the dials on your scope are accurate and that they track straight.

I don't think you can really check long range drops this way though.

pics of shooting....the bull on the bottom is the aiming point..
i put black marks on the target where the bullits impacted...near right side.....
on the left is the hornady ballistic calculator figures and the far right side is the distance in yards ....the speed of the 55 grain is 3250...
i fired at those distances at actual targets.... i only got to 400 because my horses knocked over my 500 and 600 targets and it has been snowing for the last two days.... 10 inches of new snow wet slush.... when i try to go out in the stubble with those conditions my 4 wheeler ends up with 18 inch tires..
lot of gumbo... anyway the results were really close.......

I know that's right about the horses! I set a box up with a target, and they will run over and stomp it before I can get back to the bench. He must have put some feed in here somewhere. You got to love it!

That will work but your actual zeros at each distance might not actually be that.

Long Range Benchrest shooters use that method all the time. You also need to click in one MOA of windage to compensate for twist drift at the longer distances, especially when you get out to 1000 yards.

If you cannot fire at a target you can use a similar method by bore-sighting at a distance of 50 yards or so.

that is really good info.... i am really ignorant when it comes to bench rest .....
and they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks...
never thought about the twist thingy....
holy cow you guys might get me shooting br.... if you could tie up a coyote at 1000 i might be able to hit it ..... a target ..... i don't know ;D
600 is a long way for me..,.after that it is mostly luck..... my gun could probably do it, but i'm getting short of tooth and long of beard......
one thing i didn't mention was i didn't know the mv and only found that by comparing the balistics by how close the string was with the chart,,,,, as i have said before my neighbor owns my chrono ..... i replaced it after i shot his.,..... he lined everything up and said your good to go.,.... oops,,,,,,,he had such a long face and i felt bad about it and bought him actually a better one that had a printer..... so that was probably as close to a chrono as i want to get again......
the coyotes and fox don't seem to care if the bullit is going 3600 or 4100 so i guess i'll leave it at that......
