Shooting Mat?

I currently have a Midway shooting mat. I thought it was okay unitl I borrowed a friends Creedmore mat. The only thing that has me not ordering one is that the texture was too aggressive on my elbows. I shoot f-class so do not shoot with a coat. Any recommendations?

Thanks

Look at the mats on this page. Let me know if you can use Left handed mats, I have a used one for sale.

Two questions:

1) Why is the Creedmore better than the Midway mat? I have a Midway and like it, but I have NOT tried anything else, so I am very curious.

2) Please explain the shooting jacket theory. How would a shooting jacket help improve results?

I have never even been around someone wearing a jacket, so I am very uneducated about them.

Im not the one who said Creedmoor was better, but the Creedmoor has stickier ( read rougher ) rubber on it and has a water resistant cover on the bottom. The deluxe does anyway.
The jacket will tend to absorb some pulse movement and offer a buffer between your body and the gun. It wont take away body influenced movement but it will make it slighter and less noticable.

The one shooting mat that I'm now considering is the Creedmore with the light color. Less heat collection than the black, doesn't scorch the already tender elbow areas :o

If you prefer to shoot F-class without a shooting coat (and I often do also), Just throw down a towel or a sweatshirt over your mat. It will protect your elbows as well as provide you with something to wipe your brow. Many shooters wear a sweatshirt or cut one off below the armpits so that it covers only the shoulders and arms, much like what welders use to protect their arms. Many smallbore shooters use elbow pads in prone. Yes, a coat may be best, but there are many things you can do to be comfortable shooting without one.

What on Earth makes you think you will shoot F-class better with a shooting jacket? I say just the opposite. You will be cooler in summer and more comfortable than our sling shooting brethren and therefore will shoot better. I personally do not use a shooting coat for F-class or for XTC except for off hand.

If you had read the reasons I gave for using a shooting jacket, and some more given by other folks, you would know and not be exposing your lack of knowledge on very basic shooting physiology. You pretty well nailed for everyone your lack of proper High Power training and experience when you said you don't use a shooting jacket on XTC except for standing.

I have been shooting XTC since 1982 and F-class since 2005. I do pretty well thank you.

Ouch to whomever didn't know your background Joe! :)

I like elbow pads for F-Class, like some wear when Rollerblading. However, I cut off the hard plastic cup portion, and just use the flexible padded armband remainder -- like some wear when playing volleyball. I probably should have bought volleyball type elbow pads to begin with!

Creedmoor now makes matts with white rubber as an option. It is still agressive in texture, but won't burn you when you forget to turn it over on a summer day, or when you take it prarie doggin'. Call Gina, they will make any type of matt you want, even without rubber.

My wife has a hot pink matt with white rubber and she loves it. She wears elbow pads as well to save her skin. The matts stays much cooler, and she enjoys shooting. She gave up XTC because the coats were too hot.

fivering,
I guess everyones entitled to a bad day every now and then. But trashing someone you dont have a clue about in that manner takes it a little too far. We all have opinions and personal preferences. Take them for what you will and keep your foot out of your mouth. It makes it easier to apologize.

I actually use a stadium blanket as a mat, water proof bottom and I have a door mat upside down for the non-skid surface to rest my "plates" and bi-pod on.

+ 1 for the shooting jacket, shooting High Power, National Match, PALMA since early 70's and F-Class since 06', I think I do OK also, but to each there own.

Not necessarily, it depends entirely on your shooting style. I shoot a .284 and shoot it free recoil, so it makes absolutely no difference in what I am wearing...

As far as mats, I use this one: http://www.sinclairintl.com/product/8322/Shooting-Mats for a couple or reasons:

a) it is waterproof, so it keeps you and your gear dry in the early morning dew, or if it is raining.
b) the padding is not too thick so it does not disturb the rear sandbag. It still sits flat and solid, which is very important, and does not happen with a thickly padded mat.

The flaps are a pain, and I never used them, finally just cut them off.... Otherwise, great mat.
