Shooting glasses

Reached a point awhile back, quite awhile actually, where eye glasses became one of the main components of my shooting equipment. I use transition lenses in my glasses but I'm not sure this is the way to go. One shooter says that clear lenses are better because you need all the light possible and another goes with amber or neutral grey to cut down on glare or enhance the clarity of the target. Good quality clip ons are $45.00 at my eye doctor. Not a bad price if they do help hit the target. Is there any shooters that can give me some info based on experience off the bench? Thanks a lot.

Well light is always a variable.
Getting light to your eyes is important in most cases, but preventing glare is another problem.
Your right, Transitions are a poor bet, they are made for comfort but actually weaken the eyes ability to protect itself.
Haveing a mix, of all you list is the way to go, Clear,Yellow,Grey,,

Sorry but there isn't a situation where one will cover it all.

If I was forced to cover it all with one it would be clear and I'd have different hats and visors.

Call Decot Sport Glasses 800-528-1901. He will help you get what you need and they are definitely worth the price

There is a new lens coating/lens that is made for outdoor use. They are a light yellow/brown tint, cut glare like you wouldn't believe & in some situation will pick up a little light. Can't remember the exact name for the lens but they aren't cheap & if you need bifocals , you're out of luck. They have run some ads in various sporting magazines, something like (Solis). I have a pair & they are very comfortable & target aqusition is real good.

Thanks a lot for all the input. The biggest problem is that I just got new glasses before comeing up with all these questions. They're transitions and also tri'focals. So that's what I have to work with. Anyway the optomotrist suggested clip ons of what ever color would work for the type of shooting I'm doing. She says that the lenses in my glasses will not transition to the darker color as long as the clip ons are on. Hope she's right. If that works I still need to know which tints work best for bench rest. It would be nice if one color fits all but probably no such luck. Any advice from people who have been there is appreciated. Thanks again.

Go to http://www.accurateshooter.com/technical-articles/eye-protection-for-shooters/ scroll down to the bottom and read my report on prescription shooting glasses. I just changed my prescription and went with the exact same thing again.
Works for me.

Click on the link and scroll 3/4 of the way down.
Look at the ESS Shooting Glases with Rx insert. Best thing that ever happened to my eyes.

Danny,
This is great timing as I am getting ready to order some new shooting glasses. I looked at Decot, Randolph and several others before deciding to go with the Randolph Ranger Edge. I am going to send them into eyeglasslensdirect.com to have the prescription trivex lenses installed. Do you find that the Transitions get too dark to use a scope during bright conditions?

Thanks,

Ryan

Ryan,

I've never had a problem with the Transitions appearing to dark. In fact I'm so used to them i can't tell what shade they are without looking in a mirror.

Great thread and timing, i have a eye appointment next tuesday and have already wrote down notes based off of Dreevers write up.

Thanks for all the input. Opens up a whole new set of options to consider. Sure is a lot of info. on this web. I'll be stuck with the clip ons for awhile at least but next time I'll be a lot better informed. Thanks again for all the help.

On a related note. Anyone else shooting with contacts instead of glasses? I wear contacts and have been doing all my shooting while wearing them. Any difference/benefit if I were to wear my eye glasses instead?
