Shooting and Gas Prices

It's just not the gas prices, it's the ripple effect that they've had on other consumer goods as well. So how many of you have seen a decrease in attendance at your matches, and have you personally tightened up the belt so to speak?

I for one am planning on shooting closer to home these days. It's hard to justify shooting matches two hours away especially when you factor in gas/food/components/entry fees/ etc. You can tie up $60-$75 pretty quick. You have to balance out doing something together as a family vs going shooting. The family wins out every time.

So what's your thoughts? Just thought I'd get some discussion going.

Danny,

I haven't seen a decrease in match entries this season. Actually, my average match has risen from 26 shooter to 30.

I'll still travel my normal 6 hour drive time,in a 2500HD Sierra, Gas) to shoot matches. I'm not going to let a bunch of $2500 - $4500 rifles sit dormant in the safe because the trip is going to cost me $30 more.

Besides,, Siera saw fit to DROP the price of 142SMK's $6 a box.,500ct) Even when #1 copper is getting $3.70# scrap here. They are helping the "common man" by not sending component prices through the roof. What better way to say thank, then going through 2000 bullets a summer?

Out West most drives are 225-1000 miles for me one way. I also drive a GMC 2500 17 miles a gallon. You only get a chance to shoot so many times in a lifetime. Going to Visalia this weekend for a 2 day Unlimited. Forget Bush and his gas prices.

yeah, I've been watching a british car program and they have loads of small deisel cars that get great milage over in the UK. I cought the price of gas in one of their clips and im sure it was old by a couple years or so but it was 83 pence per litre. I did the math and that works out to be about 5.73 a gallon. no wonder so many of the british cars are so tiny!

I have curtailed going to some Matchs due to gas prices also. The drive time verses shooting time verses travel expenses verses ammo expense has caused me to limit my distances to matches to less that 50 miles. I shoot silhouette, IDPA, speed steel, and LR High Power Rifle.

We are blessed here in Centeral Arkansas to have an abundance of shooting available within that distance and I can shoot almost every weekend withing that distance.

We noted Match attendance dropped when the first surge of gas price increases hit, but now the Match attendance is going back up.

 I see people spending more money on bottled water than gas. Yet, I don't hear anyone complaining? I can remember paying 25 cents
a gallon for gas and water was free. Like everything else, the cost of living has gone up. Even though I am retired and living on a fixed income I don't think $3.00 a gallon is out of line. And I am dam sure not going trade my Silverado in for a GO CART with a sewing machine motor. I just wish we could be allowed to get our own oil. That might help lower the price a little. And, I am not comfortable depending on others that don't like us.:, Badlands

Hi All
Read it and weep.A gallon of diesel is about $7.70 a gallon and a tube of gun powder is about $58.In the UK

I know one thing, when it's time to replace my gas hog Dodge Durango,15-17 mpg) I'll be joining Gunamonth and buying something that gives better milage. I need at least an all wheel drive for the winter living up here on the mountain but I think a Subaru or something of that nature is in my future. I can adapt to the smaller size. Diesel would be nice, but I don't know off hand any stations close to me that carry it.
