Shooting a dead horse w a 30BR

All the guys that recommend jam don't mention that if you have to open the bolt with a loaded round you will probably dump powder all over the chamber and trigger area. Then your at the bottom of the list.

With respect, this statement is inaccurate. During a match, if the emergency cease fire command is given, if the MD deems it safe, you will be instructed to clear the gun by firing. If it is unsafe downrange, let's say, a deer wanders onto the range, you will normally be given the option to unlock your bolt but not try to extract. If you have a failure to fire situation, the standard procedure is to remove the rifle from the bench, take it to safe place, and attempt to clear the round.

I use a neck bushing 0.004" smaller than the loaded case neck.

All this said, in 10+ years of shooting the 30BR, I've inadvertently extracted rounds maybe a dozen times with no issue. But I have dumped powder once or twice. I'll concede it's a mess but, imo, the accuracy gained by a hard jam makes the risk warranted. Good luck.

So Link. Is jam and touch the same thing? Does neck tension enter this conversation? Is jam repeatable? I cringe every time I hear the term jam.

Hi JEFFPPC, That's another ''dead horse'' I guess. I guess it doesn't matter what you call it or how you get there as long [or short] as you know where you started at?
Again, I'm guessing neck tension would be part of the equation?
So JAM on .

Hard jam, I have to clean after every card or every other. Jammed 10 thou in, the gun will stay in for the match. This barrel definitely prefers jammed.

Foremost, whether to jam is going to depend on whether your accuracy gain is meaningful. In a few of my rifles (30BR and 6 Dasher), jam is best and I moly my bullets to minimize possibility of dumping powder if a live round is extracted, potentially pulling the bullet. Have never dumped a case using moly. But moly has its own minor drawback - in those 2 barrels, I need to fire at least five "foulers" before I 100% trust my impacts. For the amount of accuracy gain in those barrels by jamming - it is a worthwhile tradeoff.

IMO no, yes, yes.
I agree with 1and 2. Not three. I would need to see someone do jam by whatever method and get the same answer 3 times in a row. If you can good but twice I have had guys going to show me and Waugh, Wauugh, Wauuugh. Lol. If is works for you great.I like touch because I can see it, every time. You and I can compare with touch a1000 miles from each other. I don't believe we can with jam. Just my conviction.

"Rama-Lama-Jama", hope I quoted that correctly.
That is what has worked on my rifles.
Just my .02
