shooting a 300 jarrett 3700FPS

think about building a 300 jarrett anybody know anything about one. a buddy of mine shooting a 155berger 3700FPS very accurate i wonder how long of a barrel life any help greatly appreciated

I wore out 4 .300 Jarrett barrels and never used anything lighter than 165s in any of mine. Had one barrel that was scary with 200 gn. partitions at about 3050 fps. Used to figure barrel life was about 1000 rounds but never kept ccurate records, just let targets tell me when to change barrels. If you decide to go this way:

Redding custom .300 Jarrett dies for sale. Good condition. 2 die set.
New $165.00, sell these for $100.00 shipped. Also have brass.

All Win. 7 STW necked up, necks turned to clean up, and fireformed in my last surviving .300 Jarrett barrel. Since 1994 I've worn out 4 barrels, started on 5th before chambering to .300 Ultra, don't know why cause already had dies, brass, etc., just did it. Have 111 fireformed only, and 17 fired a couple of times. Trashed other 23 cases of 150 doing load work up on 5th barrel before rechamber. Also have Redding Comp. Seater die with cylinder reamed out to .300 Jarret available. So, Lets say $125.00 for the brass, $75.00 for the seating die. Buy it all, dies, brass, seater for $250.00

wtd168 thanks for input i will keep your dies in mind not sure yet what i will do i thought they made the brass out of 8MM magnum. which bullets are the hardest on barrels light or heavy ? what powder for a 155 berger and primer? how long of barrels and what twist do you us? THANKS

2 easiest ways to make the brass - neck 8mm mag. down and fireform, or neck 7STW up and fireform. & STW brass is usually easier to find. Bullets not as big a factor on barrel life as powder choice and heat. Never shot 155 Bergers. I always cut barrels to 24'" and used a 1-10 twist.

I have 111 fireformed only, and 17 fired two times. I'm fairly sure these numbers are accurate, $125.00 shipped

RE:Jarrett .300 bbl wear; Go to "Terminal Ballistics Research". Nate Foster (designed 7mm Practical) has a different opinions on extending bbl. life by using non-embedding bbl. compound to clean/polish the lead.He also has some very nice long distance hunting vidio.Look at the 1125 yd. goat if you don't look at any other one! i have my reamer on the way what you all think about a bartieln 5R 308 finished at 31 inches for the 300 jarrett that baby should rock you all think that would be a good choice THANKS FOR THE HELP

I'm sure I will get hammered for this but your friend is an idiot on an ego trip ! I have the same barrel configuration as you and I get 3500 fps pushing the load. It's not how fast but how accurate! Don't understand why everyone get wrapped up in how fast they can push a bullet. Never heard a deer say "Damn that was only 3500 fps". Get off the matcho trip and shoot a good safe, accurate load!! Just my $.02 worth!!! JVON

hello Jvon everone has a opinion doors have been opened by people who will try something other than what has been done before but i was wondering what is your 3500FPS load i will say no more but you do have a bad choice of words but THANKS for YOUR INPUT and thanks Wboggs

Glad you can take the comments in a constructive way. See from your profile that you like drag racing. You may have heard of my high school classmate, Don Garlits.
Have fun with your new rifle.
Bill

got my reamer in last friday for the jarrett and will take the parts to gunsmith this week end so maybe it will not be long now also got one bad looking brake from dave kiff

I've shot a boat load of rock chucks with .30 magnums. The vast majority were with 30-8mm, 30-358STA (300 Jarrett), and 308 Baer shooting 150 Nosler BT at 3550 to 3650fps. The old school Nosler BT's were extremely explosive when driven fast. I've still got a .308 Baer and two 30-8mm's.

IdahoCTD, sounds like you've had some really explosive rifles. I saw my brother shoot a prairie dog at 50 yards with a 7 STW loaded with, I think, 140 grain Ballistice Tips running around 3,500 FPS. Parts and pieces went at least 35 feet in the air. He only did it once just to see what it would be like.

I would imagine with your 150s that shooting at rock chucks, et cetera, you only have to get close, in other words, it they are standing on something hard, like a rock, the splatter factor would be instant death. Have you ever had that happen?
