Shipping to California

Are there any special things you have to do to ship a handgun to someone in Calif?
other than shipping to an FFL?
thanks
melvin

The handgun must be on the "handgun roster", it is very specific too, not just the model but the barrel length, finish, etc. Rather ridiculous but it's CA

It actually goes by the manufacturer's SKU number. Though that can be tough if it's a used firearm.

Make sure the receiving FFL knows it's coming, and verify what they'll accept (some will receive a privately shipped firearm; some will only accept shipments from an FFL.)

And you wonder why some say "No California sales"?
Don't blame them in the least.
Be nice to have an address "out of state" just so you could tell the powers that be to "Kiss my ***". :(
There is no gravity in California, IT SUCKS!!

  1. Are any California FFLs exempt from the CFLC verification approval requirement?
    • Yes. The CFLC program does not apply to shipments made by Type 03 (curio and relic collectors) and Type 06 (ammunition dealers) FFLs.
So what exactly is a "curio or relic"? How old does it have to be?

Just a few things off the top of my head:

  1. Ship only to an FFL
  2. Don't ship any magazines that hold more than 10 rounds
  3. Make it explicit in the sale that if the recipient can't take possession of the gun (e.g., it's not on the roster) that's not your problem
  4. A threaded barrel makes a pistol illegal in CA so if your being asked to ship it to CA that's a problem waiting to happen
As you can see, there are a lot of reasons that vendors don't want to ship to CA.

So.......?.........if I bought an AR in 1975, it will be a relic in 2025? Woohoo!

For #4, any kind of screw on accessory (brake, thread protector, etc.) will need to be pinned and welded (or, I think, silver-soldered) before it can be transferred to the buyer. Basically, the law says you can't have usable threads.

It's been years since I considered shipping a handgun to CA but if my memory is correct you couldn't ship to a CA FFL yourself. The shipment had to be FFL to FFL, and the shipping FFL had to get some kind of CA special approval. Also, the gun to be shipped, at least if it was a handgun, had to be on some kind of approved list. All this on top of the above-mentioned restrictions. I canceled the sale. So long as we still have some free states I will not even consider shipping to the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia.

That is true, I believe for new firearms. For used handguns, I believe it is up to the receiving FFL who they will accept from (i.e. FFL or private party.) You can ship an off-roster handgun to California, but it can only be transferred by the receiving FFL to a CA resident who is exempt from the roster (i.e. Law enforcement, a few others.)

From the Att'y Gen website on the Calif Firearms Licensee Check program:

I am not an FFL but I want to ship a firearm to a California FFL. Do I have to obtain a Firearms Shipment Approval number before shipping a firearm to California?
  • No. Only shipments from Federal Firearms Licensees (FFL) require a Firearms Shipment Approval number.
