Shipping to CA
California IS ridiculous!!Rather ridiculous but it's CA
The handgun must be on the "handgun roster", it is very specific too, not just the model but the barrel length, finish, etc. Rather ridiculous but it's CA
So what exactly is a "curio or relic"? How old does it have to be?
- Are any California FFLs exempt from the CFLC verification approval requirement?
- Yes. The CFLC program does not apply to shipments made by Type 03 (curio and relic collectors) and Type 06 (ammunition dealers) FFLs.
So.......?.........if I bought an AR in 1975, it will be a relic in 2025? Woohoo!Curios & Relics | Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
A regulation implementing federal firearms laws, 27 CFR § 478.11, defines curio or relic (C&R) firearms as those which are of special interest to collectors by reason of some quality other than is associated with firearms intended for sporting use or as offensive or defensive weapons.www.atf.gov

Just a few things off the top of my head:
As you can see, there are a lot of reasons that vendors don't want to ship to CA.
- Ship only to an FFL
- Don't ship any magazines that hold more than 10 rounds
- Make it explicit in the sale that if the recipient can't take possession of the gun (e.g., it's not on the roster) that's not your problem
- A threaded barrel makes a pistol illegal in CA so if your being asked to ship it to CA that's a problem waiting to happen
It's been years since I considered shipping a handgun to CA but if my memory is correct you couldn't ship to a CA FFL yourself. The shipment had to be FFL to FFL, and the shipping FFL had to get some kind of CA special approval. Also, the gun to be shipped, at least if it was a handgun, had to be on some kind of approved list.
