Shipping a rifle/parts to a gunsmith??

What do you guy`s use to ship gun parts to a gunsmith?????

How much insurance do you add to the package????

Phil.

I use UPS, I insure for replacement value so I'm not out any money if something does happen. Ships in a hard case if its a rifle, if just parts I just bubble wrap.

I use one of the commercial carriers (UPS, FedEX). USPS is probably cheaper. Ship in a 'hard case' inside of a cardboard box, preferably the box the hard case came in (doesn't scream "firearm" to the world, that way) if its' a complete long gun. Insure for full value. Be sure to remove the bolt, pad it well and tape it to the barrel (the bolt inserted into the rifle makes a 'bad' leverage point). They all have "gorillias" workin' for 'um.

Where is a good source for cardboard boxes......

Not only did mine scream gun case, but i threw it away years ago....... :'(

I get mine from the local gunshops, just go in and ask if they have any shipping sleeves, or boxes the gun boxes came in. Those usually get tossed out as they are just in the way.

I get them at the appliance store, refrigerator boxes mostly, and then cut, chop, fold, double wrap over the case and tape the heck out of them.

Anyone who I've shipped to has never complained that the item wasn't packed well.

There is absolutely no difference in price between UPS & Fed Ex Grd. Their rates are identical until you hit 70# & Fed Ex is 5 cents cheaper. The same printer could be printing both & they arrive within a couple days of each other????

Go to a Medical supply house. Get a Cane or Crutch box. Take the weapon apart Bubble wrap individualy (stock and action) and then together. Good cover story

I don't think you can ship the action unless you have an FFl.
I get a hard time with this at UPS. UPS is not my choice. I use the regular Post office and the priority mail for small prts. The rates are less on the other things like stocks. Lately UPS around here has been really rough on packages , way more then the Post Office. One other thing if it's a complete rifle The post office keeps firearms under lock and key, Thats a federal law, I;m not sure about Ups on that one.

You do not have to have a FFL to ship a long gun or shotgun. Pistols are FFL to FFL. UPS will take rifles at their distribution center. I have a UPS account and they will pick them up. I usually use the USPS though and have no trouble. No matter who you deal with collecting on the ins. is a pain in the A$$.

Negative on both fronts.
Any one can ship to a FFL for the buyer to pick up, depending on if the FFL will recive from private sellers & most will. You can ship back to the Mfg for repairs etc w/o an FFL involved.
In WY I can can sell & ship to another part of the state with no FFL involved (not what I do though), this can be done in some states depeding on state & ATF firearms laws.
The USPS locks firearms up ONLY if they are being shipped via registered mail, otherwise they go regular mail.
I have shipped & recieved long guns via the USPS with no problems in the last 18 yrs using them, never had to file for insurance for damages as they have never hurt one.

Midwayusa sells really nice boxes with foam glues into them for a good price. I used one when shipping to bryant in texas and it worked fine both ways and it was cheap enough that I throw it out after I get the gun back.
