Shipping a barrel

skip the box, buy some pvc pipe and a couple pvc caps...

stuff some junk (paper, foam, whatever) down the sides of the barrel in the pvc pipe, and stuff the caps with stiff foam (or whatever works). Compress the shit out of it, and tape it up real tight. slap a sticky shipping label on the pvc tube, and I bet that thing would make it around the world a couple of times without getting beat up. :)

That's the ONLY method I've used that didn't result in a flippin mess on the receiving end.
I've received chewed up barrels (due to insufficient packaging), and I've sent perfect barrels in what I though was 'good enough' packaging that ended up trashed. If you want to avoid situations like that, the pvc pipe method is the ONLY way to go

^^^ this. I've got a really nice 284 barrel in my loading room right now that I received a ways back...except for the road rash on the chamber end where it broke through the packaging :(

+1 on PVC tube container. I have shipped and received barrels this way with no problems at all. Don't glue the caps on. 2" diameter ID is just right.

Slight variation - I glue a PVC pipe cap to one end and glue a PVC by pipe thread adapter to the other end so that I can screw a regular PVC threaded pipe plug into the other end. If you wish to leave both ends accessible, do the PVC by pipe thread adapter bit at both ends and use a threaded pipe plug at both ends.

For a little extra insurance, use Schedule 80 PVC pipe, rather than Schedule 40 PVC pipe - the extra wall thickness can't hurt.

Get a couple or cut a couple of pieces of 3/4 rubber hose/heater hose around 4" long, force one of them over the threads and the other over the muzzle, push them on for a couple of inches and leave half as over hang, saves either end a lot of grief if dropped or handled rough in transit.

The UPS customer center gave me some free long triangle shaped boxes. They won't roll around like PVC or Cardboard tubes. Bubble wrap and reinforced tape are your friend.

+1 on the triangular box. Having shipped barrels several times in PVC and had damage done, I don't do it anymore. They tend to roll around and I'm pretty sure they are used for ball bats when the shippers get play time.

+1....in addition to the above I insert two tennis balls. One on each end. Acts as a shock absorber to help prevent penetration of the PVC caps should the package be launched through the air. 100% success with this method so far.

I would bet UPS can destroy any container, I have had them break two rifle stocks. One was on the rifle coming back from Winchester. UPS has a contract to test aircraft "Black Boxes", Just kidding.

I use all 3, USP, FedEx, & USPS. Triangle boxes are the best (packaged well, newspaper packs tight), but all 3 companies will test out your packaging for you. PCV schedule 80 is second.

Shipping stocks, use an oversize square box and wrap your stock end to end with 3/8 bubble packaging. Don't skimp when shipping your expensive stock! Buying insurance is easy. Filing a claim is another story and could take up to a year.

I forgot this....

Last time I shipped a barrel in a pvc pipe, my local UPS guy told me to ship it in their "standard size" box. Meaning place the pvc encased barrel in a box. (it was a triangle shaped box) it reduces the shipping rate because it now fits their automated sorting equipment. Tubes tend to roll in place on the conveyer belts...

I'll see if I can find a shipping hub and pick up a triangle box to ship it in. Thanks for the input. The barrel hasn't been chambered yet so it sure take some rough housing to damage it but then I've really herd some horror stories over the years.

Before shipping, go to the local hardware store and buy some rubber cane tips. They come in various diameters and are heavy duty---with a tight fit and some duct tape you will eliminate damage to the ends of the barrel and along the length. This is in addition to bubblewrap, double boxing and the triangular shipping tube.
