shimming a Ruger rear base

I am seriously considering the purchase of a Ruger .308 Target rifle as a backup F Class rifle. The only concern I have is how to shim the rear base on a Ruger to get the 1000 yard elevation. Maybe someone out there can clarify that situation or comment on the rifle in general.

The Burris adapter base conversions, available in Midways catalog, will let you mount and use the Burris Signature Zee rings, or any weaver base mount for that matter). Then it's a simple matter to use the +- .020' off-set inserts, probably both front and rear rings, to get as much 'up' scope adjustment as you will need. You would need a -.020' insert in the bottom of the front ring, + .020' on top. Reverse on the rear ring: +.020' in the bottom of the rear ring and -.020' under the top. An added bonus is that you will not get any scope ring marks on your scope tube: really decreases resale value on any future sale.;)

fd: great advice! I am looking in the catalog of a Canadian retailer and see the 'Ruger to Weaver Base Adapter, for use with Z rings'. It was there all along but needed your hint to point me in the right direction. Actually I am already using Burris Z rings with 20 minute inserts in an F Class rifle built on a Rem 722 action so am familiar with the concept.

Now if someone has experience with the Ruger Target rifle for long range work and can comment on it, that would be a bonus.

Those base adapters are absolutely the way to go on a Ruger. Not just for the advantage of Signature rings.....they also have more forward/back ring mounting points.

Ackman: good point on the forward placement of scope rings on a Ruger. I have a stainless Hawkeye in .204 which is a beautiful and accurate little rifle but on the bench I can feel myself pulling my head back to get eye relief on the 6-24 scope. Can`t mount the scope forward enough with the stock Ruger rings. Just phoned a Toronto retailer and he has two sets of the Burris Ruger to Weaver bases. Going in tomorrow to get both - a set for the Hawkeye and a set for my contemplated Ruger .308 Target rifle. Also a set of 20 minute inserts.

Would still like to hear a comment from a user,s) of the Ruger Target Rifle in .308 for 600 to 1000 yd F Class. Specifically, is the Ruger`s 10 twist too steep for the Sierra 155 Palma? Ideal twist for that bullet is 13. Might move this question to a different thread in the Target/Competition section.

Burris inserts are not graduated in MOA. They are in thousandths of an inch. The amount of offset in MOA is determined by the distance bewteen the rings. A little 9th Grade math will give you the answer.

Cheechako: good point. A Freudian slip on my part. I want to gain 20 miutes of elevation and transmorgified my thoughts onto the .020' value of the inserts. Probably explains why I did not get the elevation gain I expected in my exisiting Z-ring setup. I will brush off my high school trig and calculate actual minutes gained.
