Shilen Rimfire question

Are the Ratchet barrel patent?? if not couldnt another quality barrel maker build a copy ! kinda like China does ? LOL

yes it is called 5R. lots of other barrels can be had with it
Not even close. Ratchet has 4 groves, not 5 (5R), and the rifling profile is also very different.

To answer the OP's question, I do not know if the ratchet profile is protected or not.

Edit: If the OP and tommeboy would type 'rimfire rifling types' in their search bar, you will see lots of pictures of RF rifling profiles. Of interest is the ratchet profile, that had many pics of that profile that were not Shilen derived data. So, from what my search indicates, the ratchet profile is not protected. BTW: that search took way less time than posting on a forum to get at least one wrong answer. o_O

Isn't a Muller 4 MI basically their version of a Ratchet. I was told it was but I've never looked down one. So secondhand info
No Pat, they are different. A ratchet really has no land, or not much of one. A 4MI and 8MI have a very visible land (although they are not very tall to the groove) when you bore scope one (Minimally Invasive is what MI stands for). IMO and IME, all this talk about rifling profile is much to do about nothing. Quality of the specific lot of steel, and how the MFG takes care of the machining process is probably the most important first step in a good too great barrel blank. How it's finished (lapped) is the last step and also very important. Of the popular rifling profiles in big time RFBR, killer barrels may have anyone of them.

I have a killer Calfee #2 profile Shilen Ratchet Sporter barrel. I also have a killer Muller 4MI and a very good 8MI. I also have a very good Muller 7R, and 3 out of the four I purchased (all were 7R) were very good as well. The fourth was ruined by poor smithing, but if it hadn't gotten roached by the smith, I have no doubt it would have been just as good. Broughton, before I was shooting RFBR had the 5C (which is just like a 5R) that won many matches, including big tournaments. Was it the rifling profile, or the steel they were using and the talent they had in the shop at the time? Hint, Dan Muller worked there then.

All my info when talking about barrels is based on information I got from an acquaintance that actually builds barrels, many of which have been killers over the years. The barrel lottery is a real thing. Rifling profile within what is the norm is the LAST thing that MAY affect down range performance. Not nearly as important over good production procedures, a great lot of steel, and good finish lapping.

Not sure on the Shilen Octagon vs "Walter's polygon", so no comment.

still a canted land rifling.
Yes, R/C profiles are canted lands, but a ratchet is not. The OP asked specifically about coping the ratchet and you answered, "yes it's called 5R", which is wrong. Two totally different profiles, in fact, radically different. Believe what you want, but on this topic, you don't know what you're talking about.
