Shilen Chrome Moly Match Grade Blued Barrels

Hi guys,

I have a Stevens 200 that I would like to turn into a project gun. Obviously a barrel change is in order. I have just seen that Shilen has Chrome Moly Match barrels. They are a little less than their other barrels. My understanding is that Chrome lined barrels will last longer but are less accurate. This will be a 243 build so I like the idea of lasting longer but how much of an accuracy hit are we talking about?

I would be using this rifle for mostly paper bunching. My local range is limited to 300 yards. I have never participated in a match. If I ever attend one of those long range training session at places like Tiger Valley this would be the rifle that I take.

Thanks

gunamonth: Absolutely correct. I bought a chrome moly barrel 2 yrs ago (wanted to keep the blued finish on a Ruger #1), and before the 'smith began his work, 'scoped the bore with my "Hawkeye", and found unacceptable reamer marks. It was sent back, it was explained to me that they do not lap their CM barrels (why not?), paid an extra $40 for the lapping and it came back perfect/ one of my most accurate & easiest to clean.

If you go with Shilen, you can guarantee it will be good or they will make it right. They back their products. And they're good folks to deal with too.
I've got one in .221 Fireball and had one in 6BR but the throat was too long for the weight bullets I wanted to shoot. It was still a "real shooter" even with the longer throat. Real easy to clean and was/is a real beauty in Blue!

Perhaps Ruger shall figure a way to retain Stainless Barrels. I count on Ruger to lead with the best in innovation. Cliffy

Stainless Steel "going out of style"?? I guess I'am behind times because I just got another one. That makes 6 for me so far. Don't have to worry about screwing up a "blued" finish. ;)

So long as people will plunk down dollars for the best, the best will remain available. It's called "Capitolism" and I love it. Cliffy

One thing Gunomonth didnt say is that shilen doesnt grade there Chrome moly barrels so no one really knows if they are MATCH or Super Match. The only real difference in these barrels besides material is that they are not graded or lapped. They will lap for a fee of 30 to 40 bucks. I talked with the fellas at Shilen about this about a month ago. To my surprise shilen told me that the chrome moly will not last as long on the round count. He did say that they most likely will shoot just as well, but it will take longer to brake the barrel in. If your on a budget i say go for it. Shilen also told me that he had some big time benchrest shooters shooting these barrels. He wouldnt tell me who, for whatever reason. I have one and it shoots extremely well! Good luck!! Lee
