Shilen AR 223 Wylde 8 Twist Loads

I just put one of Shilen's 8 twist 20" 223 Wylde barrels on an AR and would like some input on loads it may like. I figure around 23gr of Varget pushing a Hornady 75gr HPBT should be a good place to start.

Thoughts?

We did some load testing with a 20" WOA 8 twist 223 Wylde on an AR. We were looking for the best combination of accuracy and velocity and did not get the velocity from varget that we got with other powders. We got the best combination of accuracy and velocity with the 77 SMK and N140, H4895 and MR2520. We got good results with the 75 Hornady BTHP and RE 15, MR2520 and N140. These loads were all seated for magazine length. If you are considering 80 SMK we got the best combination of accuracy and velocity with MR2520, RE15 and H4895.

23.6 gr RL 15 Fed 205M Sierra Matchking. Great load. No pressure in my 223 wylde chamber. Shoot 23.5 with same set up in my 223 AI on Surgeon action. Shoots in sub 0.2's

With my Shilen 20" 1:8 barrel, I use 21.4 gr of H 335 behind a Sierra Match King 69 gr bullet.
shoot well under 1/2" groups. Also fairly low on the charge weight, so its easy on the barrel.

i just put a AR stoner wylde 16" 8 twist on mine. only thing iv been able to test so far is 26g of W748 with 55g hornady bulk plinkers. mag length. seems very promising load for basic plinking and such

I have shot a fair amount of 23.5 gr of Varget under 75 HPBT's in my Nordic (Wilson) barreled 1/8 twist 223 Wylde AR. However recently I tried some H4895, and I was very impressed. It provided wider nodes and better accuracy across a several charge weights. Best accuracy was achieved right at Hodgdon's book max of 22.5 gr, with several charge weights generating 5 shot groups <1". I was happy with that for a 18" carbine and a 4x scope.

I also have some RL 15 to try but haven't gotten around to it yet.

RRA 20" 1-8. Best load with the H 75 is 24.0 TAC. With 77 SMK & NCC best is 23.5 8208, with both I use Rem. 7 1/2. Mine seams primer sensitive. I've been told that the 7 1/2 are much hotter than 205 M's you might try some CCI 450's.
All loads use LC brass and loads listed shoot 1 MOA or less out to 300 yds.

Here's what I'm getting good results with. These charge weights are pretty much the center of the accuracy node in both of my 20" wylde chamber shilens.

22.6 AR Comp / 69 SMK
22.5 AR Comp / 80.5 berger .025 off
22.5 AR Comp / 80 smk .010 off
22.3 AR Comp / 77 smk

23.0-23.2 8208 xbr / 77 smk
