Shepherd Scope Question

I’ve been considering buying a Shepherd Rogue 4-12x40 scope and was wondering if anyone here has had experience with them.
What would you compare the optical quality to?
Thanks for your help.

Never heard of it personally.

Edit. Looked it up. No name cheap junk. Thats why I never heard of it.
I have not shot one of them yet. I have been shooting a shepherd scope for over 30 years and still still think they are the best scopes for hunting. the circles do a great job of ranging game.

OP- save up a few more bucks and buy a fixed power SWFA scope. Thatd be my advice for a low end scope thats actually pretty darn good quality for the price.. $299 or with parrelax adjustment $399. I have two of the $399 scopes. The turrets work great for shooting longer distances too

I have a Shepard scope on a custom 300 Weatherby. It is not the model you are asking about but is a Shepard. It is set for meters and not yards. It is a no nonsense bracketing scope. Once you decide which scope matches the guns velocity its pretty simple.

Which ever circle the animal fills up from top of back to bottom of belly is the one you use.

Is it better than using a range finder and a dope chart NO.
Is it much quicker than using a range finder and dope chart YES
Is it a very clear optic YES
Does it hold zero YES
Has it failed me in the 15 years i have owned it NO
Will it place a Kill shot in an animals kill zone out to 1100 meters YES
Has it been proven over time to do so YES
Do you need to practice and verify the set up YES

Thanks for all the good information, guys. I decided to order one. I found a new Rogue 4-12x40 on eBay for $175. It should be here by next week.

Shepherd dual reticle scopes were designed by Dan Shepherd in Eastern Nebraska. They have both a first focal plane and second focal plane reticle in them. Glass was very high quality from Light Optics Works in Japan. If I'm not mistaken that is the same company that makes March scopes. I know LOW makes different qualities of glass but also know Dan specified their high quality glass.
My brother has several of the Shepherd scopes and has had zero problems with them. One of them is on a light weight 338-378 with a brake on it. That should shake one loose if anything is going to.
I am not sure exactly when it happened but Salvo bought out Dan. The glass is now manufactured in the U.S.A. I'm not sure of the difference in the glass between the new ones and the old ones that Dan manufactured. Salvo also has a lot more models than Dan did.
I would think after buying the company that Salvo would not want to reduce the quality of the scopes.
That said I am not sure about the quality of the lower priced scopes. I don't think any of the cheaper scopes made by Salvo have the dual reticle.
