Shell hold that can fit in a pistol drill chuck

Looking at neck sizing instructions on You Tube. A shooter has a shell holder in the chuck of a common pistol drill. Where can I get a shell holder like that to fit a 284 case ?

Lee Precision is probably the less expensive way to go. http://leeprecision.com/xcart/Case-Trimming-Tools/ sinclair international also has a very nice one.

Also, the one I prefer is made by R.W. Hart & Sons (Sinclair and Midway may stock them-high quality) and I believe RCBS also just came out with one.

Tell owner Roger Miller you want this power adapter: http://www.kmshooting.com/catalog/neck-turner-tools/power-adapter-with-shell-holder.html , with the shell holder for a 284 case, so you can chuck it in your wired or portable drill.

The case holder

Tried one of these once. Those CLAWS chewed up case head rims by the bundle.

Went with this for a Solid hold without rim defacing: http://www.kmshooting.com/catalog/neck-turner-tools/power-adapter-with-shell-holder.html

I use the KM in my lathe and you have to tighten it with a wrench or it does slip and it does wobble. I limit myself to 100 RPM and I let my wrist float with the wobble. I am going to try that Lee part. I had to make my own shell holder for the KM to turn some 7WSM brass. What a pain; chucked up the shell holder and cut of the part that slips into the press. Put it on a diamond plate and honed it flat (used a grinder to cut it off). I then had to turn a mandrel, press the new one on to turn the OD small enough to fit in! It would be nice to have a universal one!

If that's true you were doing it wrong. If you get lube on the extractor groove or the shell holder it will slip, spin and damage the case. It also hurts if the neck/mandrel fit is too tight or inadequately lubed. Don't do that and it works fine.

Ken lives a few miles down the road from me so I have several of his. They wobble and to keep them from slipping need to be tightened with a wrench. The Sinclair is just as bad but you get to spend more money.

I considered it inadequate, not up to par, and therefore sent it to its rightful burial via the local weekly undertakers. You know, the guys who arrive in those big noisy trucks.

Just a FWIW from someone else who has the K&M setup... get the RW Hart case holder / driver.

I've used the K&M to turn a few *thousand* case necks. I don't have the strongest grip in the world, but not exactly limp-wristed either. Short of taking a wrench to that driver that K&M supplies (wild guess, thats why it has flats on the sides) its hard to get it tight enough to keep the cases from turning.

I got a collar made by another K&M user that fits around the case holder and provides a knurled ring about 2.5" diameter that makes it much easier to tighten/loosen... used it for several years now.

About 6-8 months ago I was showing someone how to neck turn, and the 1/4" drive shaft on my K&M driver *snapped* clean off. Guess a few too many cycles of reefin' on it to try and get it tight enough finally took their toll. One thing led to another, and I ended up fishing an RW Hart case driver out of the drawer and once I remembered how it went together (uses a regular shell holder, not a Lee) I had it working and I'd be dipped if it doesn't lock up that case tighter than a drum, with a fraction of the torque required by the K&M. Finished out that project, and most of the way thru another now using the Hart driver and man is it nice!

YMMV,

Monte

I have 2 from K&M. One works better than the other. I don't even need to tighten it with a wrench when turning necks. Not sure why, but I suspect the difference lies in the surface of the post that puts pressure on the case.
