Setting up a prone rifle, input needed

I am giving serious thought to setting up a rimfire prone rifle in an Eliseo chassis so I can have 22lr practice rifle with the same fit and feel as my center fire prone rifles. I have a rimfire Remington 40X action already that I have been meaning to do something with for sometime now. Below is a list of questions Id like some feedback on.

1. Has any one done with good success?
2. Am I really gaining anything practice wise having a 22lr clone for practice over my Anschutz 2013? I wont sell 2013.
3. What rimfire barrel manufacturer and specs would you all recommend?
4. Outside of a the factory Remington 40X does someone else make a 40X clone that will work in an Eliseo R1 chassis? More out of curiosity.
5. Should I sell the action and look for a used Hall or Anschutz already in an Eliseo chassis?

If you practice mostly with the 22 and pull the CF out for matches then having something nearly identical is valuable.

I you shoot the CF a lot and only shoot the rimfire occasionally then just stick with the Annie

Wow, lots of questions.
I also have a goal of having my smallbore, 284, and Palma rifle stocked, triggered and scoped alike. ( I use the Palma rifle for mid range) However I'm wanting traditional wood, anschutz style. For me that means 3 new rifles. Ouch!
For barrels, benchmark, sheillen, are hard to beat. There's lots of old rimfires out there with harts that still shoot too.
Why not buy a used 18 or 19 series annie and build it with a new barrel job?
I have a friend with anschutz alum. Stock with an adapter and a walther barreled action and baynard that switches out. Nice clean setup, but but don't know if it's anymore economical or not.
Please let us know what you do.

Just shoot your 2013 as is, 40x suck to load in position for .22. Having stocks the same is overrated, shoot the best smallbore gun you have. Can elesio smallbore guns be accurate, sure can. But I have never seen one win matches on the national level. 2013’s have won plenty.

If you really want an elesio SB gun, I would do as recommended above and find a 18 or 1900 action to use and build it that way.

Smallbore barrels- I have used Schneider and Shilen. Benchmark, Lilja, Hart, Kreiger, Bartlein are all excellent. Any of them can win.

Just my opinion here..........

Training with smallbore with a chassis setup identically to your HP / LR rifle is exceptionally valuable (sorry to disagree with some here). Repetitive training with the same chassis builds confidence and comfort across disciplines - and you will find that when the rifles feel and balance similarly, you will start to break shots similarly too (which will really help your HP / LR scores).

That chassis shoots well, but I agree with Morgen - the 40X ramp can allow rounds to lodge against the inside of the action in position, and breaking position is one of the only ways to get them out (in my experience, at least). But a 40X will shoot with anything out there (even the current custom action offerings).

As for barrel suggestions, Benchmark has made great barrels for years, Kriegers are great also (and available in a Remington Target contour off the shelf - which matches most HP / LR barrels for weight / balance).

For me, the key to better scores in Palma / LR was using the same stock for all of my prone shooting. It is absolutely invaluable IMHO to be able to train with the exact same position setup and feel by simply switching out barreled actions.

All the best,

kev

I'll have to agree with Kevin here. I have an Esprit Carabine chassis with V-blocks set up for my Barnard Palma rifle and my Walther KKM smallbore rifle. I don't shoot smallbore competition but I do use it to practice with at 100 yds. I think using the same stock for all your competition has many useful benefits. As for barrels, if I was going to buy a new one I'd probably look at either a Benchmark or Shilen. As a side note, I tried practice with an air rifle and it just didn't translate to better high power scores. Most accurate rifle I own though.

to the OP. So you have a 40X rimfire not doing anything with? Well that kinda answers your question already. Put it in an Ellisio Stock and go have some fun. I didn this exact same thing about 12 years ago when i had a 40 X Barreled action from the CMP. I Set it up just like my Center Fire Prone rifle ( put a Bloop Tube on it to get the exact same sight radius) I was going to put a Lilja or Shilen barrel on it, But at the last second i thought i better shoot it first and see how it shot. By god that stupid thing i got for a couple hundred dollers was shooting as good as both of my 16 series anschutz rifles. No kidding. It shot so well i took it to my only trip to NRA Prone Nationals... i think it was 2016, I got squaded with some guy named Kevin Nevius, it was fun to watch people tripping over his Racer to see my Tube gun. We had a great time.
I agree the Loading port is not fun, not the end of the world though. Instead of taking the barrel off and putting in the recoil disk i, just ground down the edges of the 40X recoil lug until it fit in the chassis. not wanting to deal with timing the extractor grooves and so forth. It was a simple quick fix.
Keep your 2013. and put together your 40X since its just sitting there...
If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks for all the input. In my head I could easily see the benefit of having a smallbore rig identical to my HP rig. The problem was, I knew accuracy wise the Anschutz would probably have more inherent accuracy then the 40x. I dont want to be at a disadvantage if I take it to a match just because its a 40X. I can shoot 100 yards here on the farm and my goal is start getting alot more practice in for Palma and Fullbore.

Who should I look into to do the barrel work on my 40X action? I'll try the original barrel but I already know I want a palma tapered rimfire barrel.

Like I was saying.. You better shoot that Factory barrel before you put a new barrel on. I was shocked on how well the Factory 28" Heavy Barrel shot. With a good lot of Lapua Center X i was shooting 1597 to 1600 with it with 12 to 16X counts at 50, and 100 yards.

How did you mount your front sight? My HP rigs have Riles front sights. The original barrel still has the front sight block but I have no way to mount a sight on it that will be high enough when it's mounted in a chassis.

Kevin Nevius builds his own rifles. Ask him.

Talk to Gene Davis 740-468-2232 if he is still at it.

Put a bloop tube on the barrel, then you can mount your front sight to that. If you are trying to match you palma gun you will probably need some length anyway.

Yes Please put a Bloop tube on your rifle. If your's is the heavy barrel like mine, Its got a 28" barrel on it and I needed a short 2" bloop tube that i mounted my 30mm Right sight onto.

Got any photos? Did you have to turn the barrel down any to mount the bloop tube?

Make a new loading tray and new bolt head.

Call Mark Penrod, He rebarreled my 1813 with a Shilen ratchet barrel. Shoots better than I.
Good thought on putting it in same stock as your HP Rifle.

If your primarily a Centerfire prone shooter, you may not know about the two main Bloop tube makers here in the USA for Smallbore. These two companies are from our Olympic team shooters and are the most common among the Smallbore prone shooters for the last decade.

Call them and tell them what your doing and they will hook you up.
