setting back barrels

Im wondering about how much magnum barrels are usually setback.
I know this will be different for every barrel and smith.
If you have had your barrel set back, post how much and cartridge please.

There are two reasons to setback.

One is to switch barrels from one gun to another of alike threads and bolt faces.

The second reason is to remove throat errosion and otherwise give a old barrel new life.

The first reason listed is more for hunting rifles with light sporter barrels.

The second is more for the target shooter who shoots alot of rounds.

You must weigh several factors. The first is safety is there enough metal left after the setback. Second is the remaining life of the barrel worth the cost of the setback. I charge the same for setbacks as I do for new chambers. Should charge more because of the agrevation.

Magnums and many over bore cartridge should have at least two inches of barrel removed from the original tendon end and at least .750 from the muzzle end. And only do this if the barrel has significant barrel life left. If the barrel has significant heat cracking the cost may out weigh the expected performance.

i have a used 7 mm stw. i am wanting to make the 7 mm tcu out of it. how much do you think ill have to set it back? the whole lenght of the previous cartrige? thanks, brian

Since the first chamber is quite a bit larger than the next chambering entire length of the first chamber will have to be removed. Measure and see if you will have enough barrel left after cutting the new tendon. Do you know the number of bullets have been the tube. A 7mmSTW is quite a bit over bore and a real barrel burner.

Im meant setback for throat erosion. I have heard up to 3" for a mag round but was wondering your experiences were on how much you might have had removed per your cartridge and smiths recomendation.

There is not any real certain measurement for setting back a barrel, usually you would set it back just far enough to clean up the bad part.
You can set it back until you run out of dimensions for re threading......

Yes thats why I was asking what peoples experiences with setting back barrels was to get an idea of what setback normal and mag cartridges would be on average.
