Serial Number Required?

I have an older 30-40 spoterized Krag that I plan on selling but I can not find a serial number on it. Is this required for a sale of a firearm to be legal? Did rifles have a serial number on them back in that era?

Many cheaper firearms did not have serial numbers prior to the 1968 gun control bill. When there is no serial number on a firearm older than 1968, a dealer enters "NSN" in the bound book. If it is obvious that there was a serial number and it was ground off or an attempt was made to make it unreadable, most dealers won't touch it as it is/was probably stolen.
