Sold pending funds - This rifle has been in our family since the 60s and is a 30-06, 1938 Springfield with a M70 19" barrel, just about 23-24" with the Johnsons Automatic muzzle brake. We lived 30 minutes from Jenkintown, PA, where Paul Jaeger had his gun shop. The trigger is stamped Paul Jaeger, as is the custom Jaeger quick-detach scope mount. The stock is stamped AJ Massell, Phila., 1958 - worked in Jaeger's shop.
The rifle is topped with a Lyman 6X, which has a scrape, as does the barrel, from a single incident. Accurate rifle and the only thing dad missed with it was a tree, when he went to lean on it... The stock has some minor dings from hunting and/or safe, but no chunks or splits. Dad took good care of his guns and fired them very little. I no longer hunt big game, or I'd keep it and my children are interested in archery and bird hunting. We're downsizing to mostly rimfires.
While clearing out some files, I found some additional information in my notes:
- The barrel is stamped Winchester Model 70 .30 Gov’t.‘06
- The action is stamped US Springfield Armory 1903. The serial number appears to be: l 5 l 4 l 4 l, making it a 1938 production.
– The stock was made by A J Massell, Phila., 1958
- In two places, one being at the front of the bolt, just under the action frame, it is stamped: P J 101. The second place is on the stock. There is what appears to be simply an ID plate on the stock, stamped: J P 101 again.
In 2013, I had a former Paul Jaeger stock smith go over the stock, install a new recoil pad, clean and oil the stock. I believe his name was James Tucker.
I prefer face to face in PA, but will consider shipping it. $1,500. I'm josywales on gunbroker. josywales3 on eBay,
Payments accepted: Postal MO, or personal with time to clear.
Possible trades: Beretta BB87, biathlon straight bolt, other rimfires.
