Semi auto 22LR

I’m starting to look at the market for a used 22lr and am not sure what direction to go. Just looking for a fun shooting semi auto that I can have a nice trigger put in. My girlfriend has never shot before and would like to start. Planning on building a fun light setup with a red dot to shoot an indoor range

I’ve messed around with putting 10/22 rifles together when I was in college but after shooting center fire I haven’t owned one since. Also saw setups on the AR platform that can be upgraded if needed. Any advice is appreciated

My wood stocked, older .22 Ruger, 10-22 with, a Green Mtn, 20", "Sporter" sized Barrel and a Volquartzen Trigger job set at 2.5 Pounds,.. IS, Amazingly accurate with, Mid priced SK and Wolf ammo !

I would start your gf on a bolt action so she learns the basic foundation of shooting where you value each individual shot. That is if she wants to learn how to shoot and graduate up to a conventional rifle. Call me old school!

I am with Tesoro thinking on this, I have never been a fan of starting new shooters on semi-autos. A bolt action is a much better learning tool. A new shooter is less likely to have accidental discharges and using a bolt action will slow them down and hopefully teach them to make each shot count.

Savage makes some good 22 bolt actions with the accu-trigger for under $200. Buy one of those to teach her the basics on and later on if she/you really want a semi-auto then do a 10/22 build. Although you will likely end up with putting a few hundred dollars into it and may have a rifle that will shoot as well as the out of the box $200 Savage.
