Selling a rifle action question.........

I can agree with your hesitation. I've seen and bought guns on Gunbroker, that had the serial numbers blacked out. I have also bought old mausers that had pictures of the serial numbers, in all the appropriate locations, to show they matched. I have wondered what the truth about it really was. I'm watching this.

Here when you fill out the form it lists the gun, you call state police for background check only if they dont have a concealed carry permit. They do the background check asking if its a rifle or pistol. No serial number exchange. They say yay or nay or up to your choice. Then the 4473 goes in a file never to be seen again except during an audit. That ser # is never linked to the buyer unless they trace it to you for an investigation. Thats where it gets wild with ftf no ffl sales its a deadend at the last ffl. The gov doesnt have a clue who has what in most states.

In what State is this?

The NICS call is to the Feds here and thought it was US wide.

Some states have the state police run the NICS background checks. NJ is one of them. It's another way to get money out of you. $15.00 plus tax for them to do it. FFL fees are extra.

Arkansas. No serial number is mentioned on that call. Most times the call isnt even made cause if the customer is a concealed carry permit holder we dont even have to call nics. Just goes in the file til they come lookin for it which around here is never. The atf comes to check it all out sometimes but they just compare inventory to logbooks and make sure you have a copy of the transfer ffl and its over. No unlawful gun registration in this beautiful state

I have sold guns on Gunbroker and had people ask me for serial numbers before bidding. I politely refuse those requests.

The way I see it is that if you are not the buyer/owner then you don't need to now the serial number. I'm not only protecting myself, but the future owner as well.

On the other hand if they are the winning bidder and ask for it then by all means I send it as I have a commitment from them that they will provide funds.

My fear is the same as the OP, that someone who is corrupt enough could file a bogus police report, and if nothing else, cause me a huge headache.

Although the Internet has become a great and inexpensive way to buy and sell things as compared to the Yellow Sheets or only having local stores or friends or gun shows available, but it leaves us all open.

The norm is that the buyer sends money, usually requested in a form that is readily converted to cash before ever sending the merchandise, which could easily be a fraud or mis-represented. I had two different people try to sell me shotguns using pictures that were Grabbed I guess off the internet.

When I am purchasing anything of value, I always ask for a location and phone number and call and talk to the person. In one case though I did that and since the person claimed to be within driving distance of me, I wanted to set up a face to face and he refused. Only warning I needed.

When ever possible I go and confirm what I am buying and when someone is reluctant to have that happen I walk.

Things like Forum Ratings / Trade Count or other References help.

In a few cases, I have dealt with sellers who get that both parties are at risk and have shipped me items after I have sent them a scanned copy of my check and a stamped addressed envelop. Of course I could never put that in the mail and they could also never put the item on the truck back to me.

Interesting to note that I bought two Caesar Guerini Shotguns last year. One for $7,900 and one for $8,400. The dealer was out west. I went to CG to pick wood and be fitted and so I guess that the dealer was comfortable that I was for real. The shotguns were drop shipped to my local dealer before my check went in the mail. Big risk on the sellers part, but we were both on ShotgunWorld as regular posters.

In any case, I ask for serial numbers and always include three copies of a Bill of Sale in with my payment for any serial numbered item I buy. This is for validation as well as insurance reasons. I am also happy to provide references that can be verified. I did that buying a shotgun from a guy in Dallas. Instead of having him give me a name and number, he gave me the name of the club where he shoots. I got the club's phone number off the internet, called and talked to two people there that shot with the guy and then sent off my $3,000.00 Personal Check. The seller had the gun shipped from the club the same day that the check showed up without waiting for it to clear. This is another pet peave of mine. I paid for my first airplane buy contracting to fly checks to clearing houses after hours. In those days it could take 5-7 days for a deposited check to clear. Now if you deposit a check in almost any bank before 1:00 PM, it will clear the same day. The funds may not be available to the following day, but the money is confirmed there and it comes out the senders account the same day. After 1:00 , then by noon the following day. When someone holds my check for 10 days or more, I get annoyed and have sent copies of my band statements (numbers block out) to show that the check had cleared my account.

Why don't you get his phone number and talk to him. Doing things via the IM or Email can create this mistrust as we don't have a voice, body or person to associate it with.

I like to talk to people. You will most likely know very quickly if there is an issue, you will understand his reason for asking and you two can come to an agreement or part ways.

Don't really care for the electronic age, people have forgotten how to talk and act with each other.

Whoops! just saw the previous post on OP date. Still my comments are general and apply to anyone doing business on forums.
