Selling a rifle action question.........

Phil

Gold $$ Contributor
I`ve done this many times before, but this one has thrown me for a loop.....

I`ve got a guy who has agreed to buy an action, but he wants me to send him the serial number on the action BEFORE he sends a check.

I`m not comfortable with this, what sayeth the masses, am I over reacting or could he register the action and declare it stolen????

He has his own FFL and I want to believe him to be a stand up guy, but we`ve never met and this is kind of a weird request........

Just trying to cover my butt....

Phil.

Perhaps the buyer is covering his butt, and wants to be sure the action isn't listed as stolen? As long as you can prove ownership, I can't see how he could register the action.

What kind of action? I recently purchased a Remington 700 Short S/S Action. I asked for the serial number so that I could check myself on the trigger recall list to confirm that what was represented about that was correct.

I feel that you are over reacting. I had my FFL for many years, so this is nothing new for me. For your own piece of mind give him all the numbers except the last and put and Xin the place of it. Ex.... 11111111X,

In one word "no"...... He sends payment and his FFL# and you verify before sending, if its valid send away.

What are your facts for your No, not looking for an argument, just looking for an education.

What is his reason for needing the serial # and what is your reason for not providing it? You're afraid he can "register" the number? Who do you register a serial # with? I would want the serial number so I can check the age of the action. You possess the action, what could he possibly do to harm you? I'd send it as a courtesy. At the very least, ask him why he wants it.

I`ve just never ran into this predicament before, so it seems a little odd to me is all....

The action is a newer Rem. 700 that needs the trigger recalled, he was made aware of this fact.

John, I was doing two things at once and for some reason thought he wanted the action first!! Lol
I'd send the serial # just as u suggested as he could get the info he needed from the first few digits, no prob with that in my eyes.

I ask for the serial number all the time.

There is a web site you can go to and check to see if it's stolen. I always print this record, then purchase the action or rifle and keep this record with the other paperwork in my files.

Here's the website: http://www.hotgunz.com/search.php

Check your serial number just to see how it works.

This person would have to have paperwork, a bill of sale or something likewise to state it's his. I too think you might be over reacting.

NOT shure if this the right place for this post, but I just had a great transaction with BRIAN COOK, from BC'S RIFLES & SUPPLIES.HE IS A STAND UP GUY. buy with confidence. A+.

Dusty,

I`m in Ca. EVERYTHING here is registered............ :'(

I may be completely off base here, but I`d rather be safe than sorry, that`s why I`m getting opinions.

The free world conducts themselves completely different from occupied territory ( Calif. )......

He can't register the gun because who is he going to sign it in from since he has an FFL? I see no harm in giving him your S/N

You're certainly right about that :-[ Even though I purchased all of the components to have guns built from other states, and the gunsmiths were located in other states, I had to pay CA. state sales tax when I took possession of the guns :o

I just lately purchased an action, It was face2face and I asked and received the serial # two days before the transaction, he also questioned my motives, I turned the serial # over to the state leos, they checked for being stolen, it was clean, we met, exchanged cash for action and everyone was happy.

Here when you fill out the form it lists the gun, you call state police for background check only if they dont have a concealed carry permit. They do the background check asking if its a rifle or pistol. No serial number exchange. They say yay or nay or up to your choice. Then the 4473 goes in a file never to be seen again except during an audit. That ser # is never linked to the buyer unless they trace it to you for an investigation. Thats where it gets wild with ftf no ffl sales its a deadend at the last ffl. The gov doesnt have a clue who has what in most states.

The 4473 goes in the file unless:
You get an ATF Check, which I had about every 24 months when I had a gun shop.
You give up your FFL or agree to hold the 4473s and Bound Books for ever.
You are Audited
The Feds decide to call them in.,
In effect there is definitely the possibility of having your Guns effectively Registered if they were bought legally through a dealer since 1968.

I was just reviewing my Bound Books and my 4473s the other day. I had hope that they had gotten flooded during Sandy.
