Seeking Deals of Week Editor

Forum Boss

Administrator
Folks, with the extra time I am spending vetting every single new Forum Registration, I am running out of hours in the week.

I think one way I can create more time is to farm out the Deals of the Week job, which is currently burning 6-10 hours, including research time.

DEALS EDITOR Job Description
The job entails finding 8-10 great deals every week, for release late Sunday night. I need finished work product: proper images, a paragraph about each deal with embedded links.

I typically find 12-14 deals, then run 8-10, one or two of which might be "repeats" from a prior month (prices/images often need updating).

The candidate must have research, writing, and photo skills:

Ability to take screen shots, add titles, crop photos, create layers, and save optimized images.

Knowledge of basic HTML tags for photos and links.

Ability to write 80-120 words per deal item. (Deal descriptions are NOT just pulled off of vendor websites. This is normally written from scratch.)

Willingness to scan 10-20 websites and e-blasts each week for best deals.

------

Compensation would be a flat rate per week to be determined.

This is a photo editing job almost as much as a writing job. I often take two or three images and combine them into the Deal photo. I really need someone who can do that.

Here's an example. This was created from two images, then red text was added:

Here is a typical 100-word deals write-up:

Here’s a killer deal on a Front Focal Plane (FFP) optic good for PRS competition and tactical applications. The Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50mm scope features 0.1 Milrad clicks with an EBR-2C illuminated reticle with Mil-based hash marks. This reticle also features the “Christmas Tree” type lower half, which provides range hold-overs with horizontal markings for wind holds. Not that long ago, this scope sold for around a thousand bucks. Now you can get the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50mm for just $649.99. That’s a great price for a PRS-ready FFP comp scope with a proven track record and rock-solid Vortex warranty.

This would be a good opportunity for someone who already spends a lot of time scanning retailers' sites and who receives sale notices via email.

If you have the photo skills AND writing skills, and can learn some very basic HTML tags, please respond here.

Thank you in advance.

From the Vortex Viper example shown above, here is what the Editor must be able to produce. I need text like this, plus the finished images to be uploaded.

<h2>5. EuroOptic -- Vortex Viper PST FFP 6-24x50mm Optic, $649.99</h2>

The html may seem weird, but basically you only need to know how to tag a link (URL), and how to write an html photo tag. No CSS knowledge is required.

I would say the time spent is about divided evenly between research, photo editing, and writing.

With a repeated item, you can pull the text from a previous edition, but we usually have to update the price, which may require re-doing the art as well.

Sometimes we can use art from a vendor, only changing the size. Here is an example. This is the same photo used on the vendor's site:

Most of the time, however, you'll need to generate the art from a couple images.

Where do you find these “deals of the week” you post on Sundays?
I will help keep an eye out and forward it to whomever gets this job if it would help, but I do good to post pics much less edit one. Lol

I check numerous websites, and receive emails from many vendors. Sites we check include:

Midsouth
Bruno's
Brownells/Sinclair Int'l
Precision Reloading
Powder Valley Inc.
Graf's
EuroOptic
Creedmoor Sports
CDNN
MidwayUSA
Natchez
Cabela's
Sportsman's Guide
Amazon
GunPrime
Bullet Central
Optics Planet

We also check Deal consolidator sites such as WikiArms and Gun.deals. I probably look at 400+ products before settling on a dozen. I'll typically write up a couple extra because invariably one or two deals expire unexpectedly right after we "go to press".
