Second scale?

I am starting from scratch building up my new reloading bench. For weighing/dispensing powder charges, I bought a Chargemaster Lite. I am thinking I should probably have a second scale to use as a check against the Chargemaster. As much as I would like one, I am not thinking I need a $1000 analytic balance. Just something so that I at least have an idea a powder charge is off and needs to be re-weighed/re-dispensed, or a scale needs to be recalibrated, etc.

I was thinking a Gempro 250 seemed to be a well accepted digital scale for this use, but those have been discontinued. I would prefer digital, but a balance beam would work, too. Can anyone suggest a second scale for this application?

TIA

I have the same setup your talking about. I have a Redding master #2 beam scale and a gem pro
250 to double check everything. I use the beam scale to get close and then take pan off and place on gem pro to get final weight. You got to watch the gem pro though, they can drift. I re zero it often. Helps to wipe pan with dryer sheet to rid static. Also have a ferrite inline noise suppressor to help decrease drifting. imho.

I check my reloads coming from the CM 1500 and double check from pan to pan using the GemPro 250 , very accurate little scale . Using IMR 4064 to a accurate 40.84 every round , been using it for 3 years .

Two scales will work, but at least one of them has to be right...and if you can find that one...then why not just use it??? If you can scare up an older RCBS 1010 that was made in USA you can probably get new bearings from RCBS and that one could be your "checker" scale. They pop up on ebay and on this forum every now and then.
I don't see what is wrong with just having a known good check weight that is close to the charges you throw the most and using it to verify the scale you have. It can be anything you can find that is close to say 40.0 grains, even if you have to file or grind a little metal off of it. Check it with your buddies scales {if they have a know good one}, when it weighs the same on a few different scales that ought to do it. I'm sayin' all this and I honestly have three scales!!!! None of which read the same!! None are bad enough to cause trouble. I have more problems with beam scales sticking just before they hit the target weight, then you end up with a high charge.

Nice reloading area you have going there. I use a Chargemaster Lite to get them close and then dribble up on my Redding #2. I also have a GemPro 250 but find I don't need that .02 grain resolution which is always changing. Hitting the Tare/Zero Button all the time gets old. I think .05 grain resolution with the Redding Beam Scale works well. The Reddings are very sensitive and repeat with the same answer. HB

A reliable beam scale will work for eternity!

For what it’s worth, I’ll add my vote for a good balance beam scale as either a checking scale or primary. I tend to use an electronic scale or dispenser to get to the desired charge quickly, and then a balance beam to verify.

On the odd occasions where I don't load alot of rounds - I'll just scoop straight into an electronic scale and then verify/trickle into a balance beam. This has saved me on a couple of occasions where I did some ladder tests and forgot which charge the next row is - the electronic scale just tells you what's in the pan - the balance beam verifies.

I have the same question. My thought is that I want the second scale to be mobile so that I can use it at the range too. Not sure what those that measure instead of throw use.

I have been running a 10-10 scale against my chargemaster. Works pretty well. Let the chargemaster throw it, verify (trickle if needed) and pour.

My vote is for a beam scale as well. It's an excellent Idea of yours to have a second scale, I have a chargmaster as well and nothing to check it with.
