SEB Mini - First Time Out/Impressions

Jay Christopherson

Not An Admin
I thought I'd collate some thoughts here after taking my SEB Mini out to the range for the first time. I've been using the NEO for the past 5 years (in fact, I have one of the early first gen NEO's).

Random Thoughts:
Setup is a little different - I'm so used to my NEO, that I actually had to think about setting up the MINI. Loosening up the center post so that I could dial it up, adjusting the legs, etc... but, it only took a few minutes to get the hang of it. Once I figured it out, it went pretty smoothly. This first time out, I situated it with one leg to the rear. My NEO sets up with the leg to the front. Doesn't really mean anything except that the orientation was a bit different.

Thumbs Up:
  • the center post adjustment wheel is really smooth, once you loosen the center post dogs.
  • like how the bag adjusts to your rifle orientation once you loosen the dogs; it "auto-centers" if you will, unlike my NEO where I spend time specifically centering the rest to the target as much as possible. You can really set down this rest in any position and easily center it to the target without having to "aim" it precisely.
  • it's very solid; once the rifle was setup, I could detect no play in the system at all
  • once I started shooting, the rifle tracked extremely well; I felt like my stock preferred the MINI bag setup to the NEO bag setup just based on recoil tracking, but it's a very small sample size so far.
  • typical SEB quality; for a "basic" rest, it still tops most of the others I've used
The Not-Quite-As-Much-of-A-Thumbs-Up:
  • if you use the leg adjustments in the "downward" direction (i.e., to lower the rest), you must push down on the rest before use; I cannot stress this enough. The fitting, right now, is so tight/precise, that the screw will move without moving the leg. It's almost like the old Leupold elevation adjustment issue. It's possible this may resolve itself as the rest sees use. If you do not push down to remove backlash/play, it will move on you during recoil.
  • the leveling posts are too short, particularly on one leg. It seems like this rest was designed for F-Class and 4" - 6" adjustment screws should be the minimum. The leveling screws that come with it are too short for F-Class feet and too short to adjust for unimproved firing points. Make sure you ask for long screws. I feel like this should be the default though.
  • The shortest leveling screw is so short that there is no jam nut on it. Make sure you ask for one when you ask for longer legs.
It's possible that the intention was that you would use the leg adjustments to adjust the rest level on uneven ground and so would not need longer leveling screws - however, I think I would prefer to have the legs adjusted out as far as possible, to maximize the surface area in use. Then use the leveling screws to level the rest (similar to the NEO) and then the center post to adjust for elevation. I'd probably only use the leg adjustments themselves if the situation really required it.

Overall, I really like this rest - I was able to easily shoot to the level I routinely do off my NEO. This was off a concrete firing point. As it stands right now, I don't think I could shoot this off an unimproved firing point, but with a few updates, I think it'll be great.

EDIT: I also found the standard joystick to be a bit short for my T-Rex reach... however, luckily Seb is smart and used the same dimension center post as the NEO so I easily slipped on my self-modified extended joystick. :)

Jay,
Thank you for giving us your first impressions so quickly.
Sebastian loves hearing input from shooters.
I had 10 MINI's come in.
No more MINI's heading my way until February Seb has told me.

Jay,
Thank you so much for yours, very much appreciated!

The locking mechanism/detail on the Mini allows the top to be rotated and secured in any positions.
(It would also last for a long time under normal use).
I don't make any groove/slot on the post (to lock the post and to not damage the thread of the post when the locking screw is tightened), because it is not needed. The s/s inserts between the end tip of the lever screws and the center post work very well.

Re; leveling screws
I want to keep the rest (as is) to be as compact as possible when folded, to not exceed the size of the head/top. Also to keep the end tip of the leveling screws away of each others when folded.
For that reason, the length of the leveling screws are "already maximum". The rest top can be as high as 10" or more when set at the highest position, about the same as the NEO/MAX.
The tiltable leg design also allows to be adjusted for un-even ground and to add the rest height by some.

One screw is intentionally made short and has no counter nut (to keep it as low as possible), so that the joystick wouldn't interfere when the user sets the leg that holds the short screw on shooter's side/rearward. (But of course the base can be set in any angles/positions in relation to the target, such as one leg set in the front toward the target, or angled, etc, then let the top to "self-center").
The short screw still can accept F-Class feet.

Longer screws would be made/available under request (optional). Thank you for yours!
(However the owner might probably need to un-screw the longer screws when storage).
I will also make soft carrying case for Mini rest, soon (optional).

You are right! Thanks for explaining this matter!

With the cross bolt and the cutout on the head, the legs can be adjusted i.e. to be tight or by bit loose when folding.

All the best,
seb.

Yeah, I should probably clarify my statement a bit. It *can* accept an F-Class foot, but there would be no adjustment range left over. For the other two screws, there would be very minimal adjustment available. On a surface like concrete or what is found at Ben Avery, it's probably not a big deal. Those are already flat or very improved surfaces. At Lodi, I think it could potentially be problematic, as well as at some other ranges I shoot regularly.

It's a very small, nit-picky thing. I just wanted to point it out for F-Class shooters/buyers as I think most would end up going back and ordering a set of longer legs. If that's your preference, you might as well order them up front with the rest.

Jay, I will arrange to send you a set of longer screws after new year.
Please message me if you need anything else.

Merry Christmas and Best Wishes!

Jay,
Thanks for the comprehensive and well-written review. I agree that the Mini is an important new product.

Couple Qs: What is the stock on your rifle and what tripod are you using for the Labradar?

PM

The tripod is a Slik Sprint Pro II

Me likeeeee. I normally shoot FTR, but was able to watch my bullet trace at 300yds using this rest and my 6brx. I normally can't see that in ftr even with my 223. Maybe Fopen in my future.....??

I'd add on more wish to Jays list. A "keeper" on the threaded post to keep the top from falling out onto cement if you forget to retighten the dogs after folding it up for the day.....just sayn. Drew
