seatting into the lands.. HOW???

How can a person seat x amount of thousandths into the lands? When chambering a round wwhen the bullet reaches the lands doesn't it stop and just seat deaper? From listening to posts hear it seems that for some bullets seating with a jam of xx amount is advisable. Also it must be possible to do without much neck tension. Is this correct? thanks tootalloutdoors

If you seat a bullet at a length such that when the bolt is closed it is pushed back into the case neck, the length that it is pushed back to is by definition jam length for that neck tension and bullet combination. If you hold a wad of 0000 steel tightly around the bullet of a loaded or dummy round and spin the round a few times before doing this, small harmless marks will be made around the bullet that will make seeing the marks that the rifling makes easier. Working back from jam is easier and it is easier to accurately establish than "touch". Make sure that you understand that seating a bullet into the rifling increases pressure. I always do a pressure test at jam to establish my maximum safe charge for a particular lot of powder, at a particular temp. and humidity first thing so that I won't get a nasty surprise later in development, since jammed is the "worst case" for pressure,as far as seating depth is concerned, any charge that I use below max. charge at jam should be safe. A depth shorter than,or back from jam is easier to find than in from touch, and is a more common method in Benchrest. On the other hand you should understand that a few shooters jump their bullets, and that there are "nodes" in jump distance. Just because a rifle does not shoot with a bullet some distance into or out of the rifling does not mean that it won't shoot at another seating depth either way. There are sweet spots, both in and out, which is why you may need to start at jam and shorten a couple of thousandths at a time, shooting three shot test groups over flags to find where your best accuracy is.

Boyd,
Interesting concept concerning nodes with regards to seating depth. That is the first I've heard of that.
