Seating shallow throats

I have a Savage 308 with a Shilen barrel that has a shallow throat .
Some bullets such as 175 VLD’s seat so deep that using the Sinclair hex head bottoms out on the brass . Most bullets seem to work ok using the 7mm hole but seems the VLD ‘s don’t fair so well with consistency like this .
Is there any other way to do this ?
Would trimming the brass back beyond normal trim length work ok ?
Thanks , Kenneth

The problem is your rifle is throated for lighter shorter bullets such as the 55 Palma or Match Kings that have a much lower number style ogive.
Trimming the brass would never be a consideration in a situation that you are experiencing. The answer is you throat the barrel out to use the bullet that you are wanting to use. You can still then use the shorter bullets, you just might not be able to get as close to the lands as you wish.

When you seat the VLD’s so the round will chamber, does the straight part of the bullet’s shank go past the neck shoulder junction. If so, this will become a problem after subsequent firings as neck tension will become erratic due to the shank encountering the donut that will form in time.

Get a smith to run a throating reamer in it.
Easy fix

Yes , most bullets do go beyond the shoulder /
neck area , unless I’m loading 150’s or lighter and that depends on manufacture . Most of my brass has numerous reloads on them .
It’s a 26” heavy sporter and usually don’t have much trouble with various loads staying in the 1” arena .
Often shooting .3’s to .7’s with it . Depending on bullet .
Kind of weird that 190 VLD’ give me enough bullet to run on bullet shank with 30 cal hole but 175’s doesn’t and 155’s also gives enough shank .

make a choice, single shot loading or mag loading. load a empty dummy round of the 175 at your desired length and then have your gunsmith throat for it.
just a note a tmk175 at 2.83 has a lot of bullet in the casei. i havd a 95 palma reamer ground for this specific load
