seating bullets

That would seem to me like it would make for uneven tension and all the problems that occur with that. Also the powder would stick to the neck and make it harder to seat as straight, at least in my mind. Tom

Howdy !

Actually yes..... I do lube necks prior to seating.

Oppposite of what BulseyeTom mentioned....... I have read tech reports of testing performed w/ precision rifles; that shows
neck lube actually making bullet release more consistent. I believe the testing method was a force gage attached to a bullet puller mechanism.

I use powdered graphite. Works for for me !

If just shooting targets, competition, or maybe even a varmint rifle, it can't hurt to try lubing the necks and see if it tightens up your groups.
I agree with "357mag" that graphite is the way to go for neck lubing unless you want powder sticking and being contaminated as you fill the case.

If rifle is a magnum with magazine feed used for hunting, lubing may not be a good idea. It will allow the extra rounds to change bullet seating depth easier if they slam the front of the magazine during recoil.

Always make sure you CLEAN the necks out with a brush after every firing. Lubing or not.

A big NO. Besides the lube contaminating the powder, and not being able to control neck tension, you are introducing an unnecessary barrel fouling component to the bore. Brushing, one pass with a nylon brush, the carbon fouling from the caseneck from a previous fired case is the only "lube" that will get a tuned BR gun to put all 5 shots into the same hole.
Regarding graphite, the only use in BR that I know of, was to coat the bore with Lockease (liquid graphite) in an attempt to minimize metal fouling........never in the case necks. Lockease was used before Danzac, and boron nitride.

i agree with lhsmith...that would be adding an another variable to an already complicated equation...remember kiss...keep it simple stupid...not that your stupid...its just that often times the simplest things can be made so complicated...if adjustment to neck tension is needed use a die with neck bushings and make the changes there...at least the changes will be alot more controllable

Your not lubing the case on the outside. Certain lubes will not interfere with powder or primer burn! You only use a small amount inside the neck of the case before seating bullet. It’s not used on the outside of the case. I doubt that the bolt slamming closed would push the bullets back in the magazine , however it is just designed to ease bullet seating! I’ve personally found it very helpful in helping to keep consistent neck tension!

Only on new virgin brass before the first firing. The necks on some brass come seriously undersized and I run an appropriate diameter expander through them. I use Imperial case lube on a Q-tip and put a very light film on the inside the case neck. Helps with expanding and reduces the "stickyness" of a bullet being seated in the brass that has no carbon coating on it.

I lube the bullets itself by dipping them a few times in the Redding graphite applicator - this way I don't have to dip the case necks - which would mean I had to do that before I throw powder, and since I only lube the bullet, I don't have messy outside brass necks...
