Seater dies

Has anyone got bored enough to take old barrels and make seater dies off there chamber reamers. I know wilson is the source for blanks and have reamed out several, but got a few old barrels been eye ballen an gots lots of seater stems. Don't know if I'm good enough on seater stem clearance, may need to be honed in. any thoughts maybe not that bored. Bill

I do not know about being bored, the seating die does not offer case body support. The most important factor when seating a bullet is the alignment between the bullet and neck. I made some seaters without die bodies and without seating stems.

I have used take off barrels for chamber gages, most chamber gages are rip offs of the Wilson case gage. I match the case head protrusion form the gage to match case head protrusion in the chamber.

I agree the most important step to me is the tight tolerance on the stem clearance and neck bore being true to stem bore which shouldn't be a problem i don't think. I look at my ole warner size die and it just amazed me the finish they can maintain. Sure the seater stem clearance be the one that gets a little tough to hit. Guess if i do try it the runout tells the tale. Thanks Bill

The answer is yes bill. They work real good. Guff is talkin about dies without die bodies and seater stems without stems- maybe you know.

gots lots of seater stems.

Not sure what type of seating die you plan to make; Like everybody I have seating dies that are not designed to be used in a press with 7/8X14 threads. It is possible to make a seater type die that is free standing without cutting threads. I have a universal 7mm seating die that is threaded from one end to the other, inside and out. The 7mm round that will not fit this die has not been made. If the seater is not threaded the seating depth can be adjusted when using an arbor press.

I make a seating die out of barrels on about every chamber I do, or even use barrel stubs from Brux.
I use the Wilson stems and fit them to the hole for a slip fit.....
I use a chucking reamer for the final cut on the stem hole........

Sorry Mr Guffy i really did not explain to good. but i do really appreciate your replies. I Use the arbor press and wilson seaters. Preacher spot on. I had not thought about the chucking reamer for that tight a fit. Thanks Bill

My seating Die. I use my chambering reamer in an old barrel or barrel cutoff.

For the stem I grind the stem to size to a slipfit-.0005 in the reamed hole in the die body. I have a miniature solid carbide boring bar to cut the end of the spindle to fit my bullet. I use Mitutoyo 148-352 micrometer head.

Using my chambering reamer makes the brass a sliding fit and holds it concentric to the bore. I can monitor seating depth to .0001 if I chose, but I don't even try.
