SEARCHING FOR PRIVATE RANCH TO HUNT PRAIRIE DOGS IN 2014

I still remember my trip in the middle 90's to a range up north of Gillette, WY. There was a private rancher who had trailer houses set up for deer hunters but he'd let hunters stay during the summer to hunt his prairie dogs. I think it was the TR Ranch, but I could be mistaken. I think that ranch sold a few years later and they stopped inviting hunters. They probably have gassed the dogs like the other ranchers by now.
Anyway, if you know of a private ranch that would love to have an old guy and his wife stay in our fifth wheel and thin out his prairie dog herd, let me know. Dennis 541-868-7493

Good luck with your search. Seems private ranches that will let you shoot for free are getting harder to find. Me and a couple of shooting buddies meet up in Wyoming every year and shoot for about 7-8 days. We shoot between Douglas and Gillette. We have access to several private ranches (one is about 80,000 acres) and we also hunt some BLM land.

The only down side is I live in WV and the drive is loooooong. I would love to have an RV to make the trip with.

Thanks for the response. I live in Western Oregon so will be quite a drive for me too. I remember so fondly that hunt in the early 90's that I want to share it with my 41 year old son. Well, hopefully, we can find some places to go. I like the private ranch idea because you know you're going to get some shots and won't be too crowded. I won't mind paying a fair amount for the privilege.

Wow! You're in western Oregon? You have some of the best ground squirrel shooting in eastern Oregon. You get more shooting and you don't have to drive for two days. That's where I would go.

Sage rat season in Oregon generally runs from March to July, give or take a few weeks either direction.

Glad you asked the question and sure do appreciate Lapua's response.

Been a couple years since I JOURNEYED to Wyoming from here in South Florida. We now have a smaller toy hauler and wife and I hope to do it again in 2014.

Have to agree ground squirels are a kick if there close. Shot a boatload in central california, Set with a colony close for the pistol and a few hundred out for the rifle. I miss it.

Some other things I remember about that prairie dog hunt on the private ranch weres that after the first shot every morning, it was like the dinner bell had rung for the predators. Fire a few times and then watch all around with binoculars for the eagles, rattle snakes, badgers, hawks, etc. coming out for the meat feast. They had seen this all before. I took four guns but the most fun caliber was the smallest, the .223 because I could watch through the scope what happened when the bullet hit. Two dogs talking face to face. One gets blown to bits and the other looks around for a minute, wondering what the hell just happened and then starts eating his buddy.

If you want to venture farther east to montana next spring take highway 2 across the highline anywhere between cutbank and Havre drive around until you see a field with them running around in it, we call them gophers(ground squirrels) and ask any wheat farmer i'm pretty sure they will let you shoot I haven't been turned down yet they hate'm.

This list the location of Wy game and fish warden' offices - i have found calling them and discussing the question you have has given me a number of introductions through them to ranchers.

they know where the dogs are and who has not poisoned them and who will let you shoot.
i have also found some good deer hunting this way not only in Wy but other states.

Call here talk to Jaime and ask about some ground squirrel places around there. There is tons, its our own back yard I thought I'd tell you about it. Good food to if you want to stick around and eat probably one of the best meals I've ever had.

I was in Wy in June & was put on a great Pd town by a local resident on public land. I have no idea if the dogs will be there in 2014 but willing share info if interested. Dar

New here and looking to see if I fit in. Avid shooter of AR's, AK's, striker and hammer fire pistols as well as my last purchase of the Ruger American Predatro 6.5 creedmoor.
Just installed an Odin Atlas 6.5 comp and Timney trigger. I have pictures of both installs if anyone would like to see them or have questions.
Below is a pic of my Ruger American with the comp and a closer look at the comp.
Very impressed with it and the price was great.Atlas 8 at range ready to test (2).JPG Atlas 5 side view.JPG

Welcome Steelfingers - first post!

You should have put your introduction on the main message board section with a new topic. You picked this one that was 4 years old and long dead. Expected you to talk about a hunting ranch in Wyoming.

Maybe you will?
