Screw thread size

Standard scope mounts use 6-48 screws. The 8-40-s are considered "oversize".
8-40 is what a gunsmith uses to fix a stripped hole. some custom, mostly magnum, rifles that are drilled to 8-40 as it is a larger, stronger, screw

If your action ever goes into a smith's shop, have them change the #6 screws to the larger size.

I had a problem where my 308 went from reasonable to horrible like flipping a switch; turned out the scope rail was hanging on by 1 out of 4 screws. The other 3 had snapped. No problems since going to 8-40's.
