Scratched Eye (Corneal Abrasion) ?

i got hit hard by a stick in the eye, unfortunately my shooting eye. I have a very bad scratch all the way across the center on the eye. As of now its so blurry im basically blind in that eye. Anyone ever come across anything like this?

Yep, its the most uncomfortable thing to deal with not being able to see clearly. I had lasik surgery 4 years ago. Got a deep scratch across my eye from a piece of metal that flew in from the side of my safety glasses. Eye dr. put a patch over it and said to leave it there for 3 days. Gave me tobrimycin (sp) to put on the eye lid. All was fine within a week. Dr. said that the eyes are the fastest organ in the body to heal itself. JUST DONT RUB IT!!!

Just my .02

When I made my previous post, I was thinking that it was an old injury.

Thinking back, close to 40 years ago, when I was welding a lot of rebar, I had a tiny piece of slag make its way past my hood and glasses. It got under my lid, and my blinking scratched my cornea. Hurt like hell. The doctor cleaned it, gave me some drops and salve, piled a stack of gauze on top of the closed lid, and taped in in place. It healed OK. Get thee to medical treatment NOW!

Ya already had it checked, they are hoping to get me in for full evaluation to eye clinic mon. happened fri eve and i went in sat morn

OK, This is from a veterinarian, but an eye is an eye and I have treated hundreds if not thousands of corneal injuries ranging from dogs with a cats claw into the eye to minor superficial corneal abrasions. And besides, your not paying for this so that's what it is worth.

Get to the ER or other healthcare provider and make sure it has not penetrated deeply- there is a membrane below the cornea that you DO NOT want to penetrate.
Then, they will insure that there is nothing foreign in the cut-plant matter or other debris.

Usually it will be irrigated with saline and then you will be given an antibiotic like Tobramycin or Neomycin or similar to be used 4 or so times a day.
Maybe even an anti-inflammatory to keep the pain down.

Now, since you are not a cat or dog they will not put the "Cone of Shame" around your neck to keep you from rubbing it. That is up to you :-))

You will then be sent to an ophthalmologist - mostly to CYA of the primary provider.

You should be fine in 3 or 4 days if no secondary infection or deeper trauma.

Good luck.

I'm an electrician, due to a very unfortunate mishap by a co-worker I had a bad arc-flash a few years back. Not a scratch, but a burn to the corneas. It was amazingly painful, and scary as hell but really your eyes are designed pretty well, they heal up and keep functioning without too much fuss. Do what the doc tells you, keep them clean, stay away from dusty enviroments, wear a patch if need be, and you'll probably be fine. I was layed up for a cple weeks- no problems at all now.

I was wondering why there was a "Cone of Shame" waiting for me at the pharmacy counter ;D. im hopn it gets much better or theres going to be alot of RT handed guns for sale :-[

Had hot slag from a weld pop me in the center of the eye..Huge blur several days...Got eye pain deadner and applied for sleeping...Careful with that stuff...use it and you can take your eye out with a spoon and not feel a thing....Mine got OK..LT

Mattri , Oh i remmeber the days of Flash . Was an electric lineman for 18 years went home many a time feeling like a had sand in my eyes from a flash . ! night I made a 19,920 volt phase to ground short not only did I have the feeling of sand in my eyes .I thought i might have something in the back of my draws :-\

Oh man! That would do it. Biggest thing I've seen let go is 136. Stil plenty of stinky unders.

FWIW I had something very similar happen about 4 or 5 years ago. All the posters were correct that the opthamalogist taped the eye and all was well in a few days...... until for no reason the cornea would become re-torn and painful as ..... Doc said that abrasions as a result of organic matter (sticks etc)as opposed to metal and such often have\leave traces of sap or whatever that don't ever come out and therefore prevent the abrasion from ever completely healing. Dealt with that for a couple of years until a different PHD suggested PRK which is an older form of "lasik" in which the surface of the cornea is "milled" so as to correct vision instead of the flap which is used in true Lasik. Had PRK in the eye with the persistant corneal abrasion and LASIK in the other. Been 2 years now and no trace of the abrasion and 20/15 vision to boot. I had significant astigmatism and far-sightedness in both eyes before. Keep the eye taped for the prescribed time and I hope yours heals better than mine did.

Just a follow up, my sight went from 20/15 before i scratched my eye to 20/50 the week after and thn 20/60 showing an Astigmatism now and because theres a cut in eye flap from the lasik they dont want to touch it. They said id probably have to try PRK. Hopefully ill be able to see and shoot by hunting season, they want me to wait for 2 months for they eye to heal more but my vision may get worse from scaring.
