OK, I,m starting to put together the components to build a 30 BR so I can compete with you guys without this damn cruth,6ppc). Looking at the equipment lists, it looks like you guys favor H4198 and a BIB, Fowler, Euber in the 112-125 range. Do you find yourselves running hot loads? are you using a lot of jam? Getting back to the rifle, I've already ordered the action and stock but no barrel or reamer yet. I love my 6mm Kriegers, so I will probably go with a couple of those but I'd like your opinion on 17 or 18 twist? And as for the reamer, the only one I know of is the Robinett, seems like a good choice, but what N.D, do you guys prefer? I have absolutley no experience with this cartridge so any insights are welcome.

Bullets: Bibs, Euber, Cheek, Fowler and I'm sure a couple more will do fine. Powder: Yes, most use H4198, but N130 has a big following. Some have been giving Tubal 2000 a try with good success. Brass: Lapua of course. Reamer: The Robinett is the standard, most with 0 freebore, and .330 neck. There are some reamers with .332 necks. Barrel: Take your pick, 17 or 18 twist. I've shot 18 twist in really cold temps with no problems. Some shoot 16's. Load: Some pack a bunch of powder in the case, some don't. I follow the touching the lands concept, I've never had much luck jumping bullets. But your barrel/bullet/powder combo will tell you which is best. Try them all. Usually when you reach about 2950fps you'll be smiling.

I thought I was the only one using T2000. I get about 2980 with BIB 118. I did good at one of the Webster City shoots. On Sat. was in 1st, drop a point, went to 3rd. Well next time.

Hi Tightneck:

You'll surely enjoy the "Thirty Experience" from everything I've seen. I am having one built also, and have worked quite a bit with two friends who have them and are winning with them. H4198 is one of the Hodgdon Extreme powders and as far as I've seen the most stable and least fussy of all the powders. Some guys have their id tied to Vihtavuori powders from years of PPC work but I think when truth finally wins out most will agree H4198 is good and very stable. BIB and Euber bullets without doubt, though each barrel seems to have a choice over which ogive it will shoot best. We're starting to see more consistency with the lower numbers,7, 7.5, 8) ogive but still lots of shooting to do. This past weekend at the range the boys found that for 200-yd. they got much better accuracy with more jam than they had been using -- I think around .018" into the lands. One has Krieger and one Lilja and both are hummers but not always with the same loads. Most 'smiths like 1:17 with 4 grooves, but 3, 4, 5, 6 grooves all seem to work well.

Thanks for the info guys. Actually I'm not having this rifle built, I'm just starting to get my feet wet in metalworking and this will be my first complete rifle. I will do alot of practicing and chamber a couple barrels while I wait for the components to arrive. I ordered the BAT 3 lug about 3 weeks ago and I'm sure I will be waiting around 6 months for that, hopefully). In the meantime I have been practicing on round stock for a while and getting pretty good at cutting a tenon, and threading the tenon to fit one of my blueprinted 700's. Wish me luck:).

When i had my 30BR built last year i decided on the projectile before chamering was done set it in a prepared case and had the chamber cut to suit so i get a full neck seated just above the neck shoulder joint right on top of the powder 32.8gr Ar2207 same as the hogdon powder used over there. I was haveing a little problem with vertical so was advised to seat .020 into the lands which rectified the problem but measured several cases after chambering and each had pushed back .006 so now i seat so they are .015 into the lands and they perform better than i can shoot it at the moment but improveing every outing.
