scopes 24 power V. 32 power--600 & 1000yd

Setting up a new rifle for 600 & 1000yd bench competition. Trying hard to decide if a 24 power variable or a 32 power variable is going to be the most useful. What does anyone think about this?

Take your time - you are going to get some input on this one!! On the days everyone can turn their scopes up you will want to also.

Weaver 36x works great for me , an the guys shooting the variables didnt shoot that much better . When the mirage is bad no scope will see through it.
I cant remember ever needing a variable powered scope for benchrest shooting.

Aim small - miss small....... The higher the magnification, the smaller you can aim.

I think you meant "Aim small - shoot small". That said, I am always at 40+ with my NF or March. Mirage is always your friend. Use it to your advantage.

Another big advantage of a variable, not mentioned very often, is the ability to reduce the magnification to minimum, find your very small target downrange, lineup the rifle, front & rear rest, then increase the magnification to whatever power you want.

In our local match's, we are shooting at multiple distance targets, from 1 to 500 meters, the time clock is running, so the less time wasted trying to find your target downrange is to your advantage.

Nice to have a very wide field of view compared to a small, narrow one.

If a match consists of one or two fixed distances, and without the time clock running, then fixed power would meet the needs.

The Nightforce(s) are used in these multiple distance match's, and the Leupold Comp. Series 40's are used for 300 yards & less.

To each his own. ;)

Actually, I take back my previous remark about dialing down my Nightforce 12-42 BR only once. I use the variable power (at 12x) to set the rifle and rest up initially, and periodically during the match to check the target number if I get paranoid about cross firing. For the actual shots, it stays at 42.
